Sokobanja – Discover Thermal Springs, Nature and Culture
Sokobanja combines hot springs, waterfalls, historic sites and varied trails with a vibrant regional culture. In the surroundings of Soko Banja lies the Velika i Mala Ripaljka protected area with the source stream of the Gradašnica, the Velika Ripaljka and Mala Ripaljka waterfalls, an connecting gorge and erosion basins. The range of activities therefore extends from short trips into nature to longer days of hiking and outdoor activities.
Thermal springs and trails for different day plans
In the central Amam bathhouse are the Sv. Arhanđel spring, at 43 °C, and the Preobraženje spring, with a temperature between 43.8 and 53 °C. The Turkish bath “Amam”, now called Park Bath, was built in the 15th century on foundations dating from the Roman era. It has museum value and is protected by the state. Anyone interested in the history of the town and its baths will find a notable point of interest here without having to leave nature experiences out of their itinerary.
The Staza zdravlja health trail is 1,080 m long and was laid out around the Sokobanja Special Hospital. It can be used for walking, running and training under professional supervision. For a shorter recreational route, the Popovica circular trail is a good option: it is 2.9 km long, has an elevation difference of 45 m and is an easy recreational route. In addition, Sokobanja has more than 200 km of marked mountain hiking and walking trails. Ozren also has a 15 km circular route for mountain bikes.
Waterfalls, fortress and museums
The Lepterija excursion destination is 2 km from the centre of Soko Banja. You can reach it via a paved road or a varied forest trail. The medieval Sokograd Fortress is only 500 m from Lepterija and can be reached via a forest trail. The two destinations can therefore be included in the itinerary as a separate excursion, with the distances stated referring respectively to the distance between the centre and Lepterija and between Lepterija and Sokograd.
The Zavičajni muzej local history museum is located in the centre of Soko Banja in a completely preserved 19th-century building. The building was constructed in the old Serbian Morava style. The collection includes archaeological, ethnological and historical exhibits from the Roman era to the present day. The Miluna Mitrovića Legacy presents changing exhibitions by renowned Serbian and international artists throughout the year. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore combine a stay with excursions into nature, local history and changing cultural offerings.
Regional cuisine and events
The Grudonjske Vodenice ethno hub is 2 km from the centre of Soko Banja and comprises two mills that are more than two centuries old. With the support of an instructor from the “Etnos” ethnological workshop, visitors can prepare dishes from the Soko Banja region there according to traditional recipes. The “Zlatne ruke” event has been held in Soko Banja since 1983; visitors can sample old traditional dishes or buy traditionally crafted souvenirs there.
The Vrelo summer stage is also part of the town’s cultural character. Its large stage can host events for many spectators, including concerts, musical theatre performances, festivals and shows. The largest ornamental pond at the summer stage serves as an ice-skating rink in winter. The “Prva harmonika Srbije – Sokobanja” festival is a musical-cultural competition and entertainment event that has been held since 1962. The semi-final takes place in July and the final in mid-August.
Choose a holiday apartment according to your preferred travel experience
When searching for a holiday apartment in Sokobanja, you can first consider which experiences should define your stay. Those planning to visit the Amam bathhouse, the local history museum and the Miluna Mitrovića Legacy can focus on the accommodation options in town. Excursions to Lepterija, Sokograd or Grudonjske Vodenice involve specific destinations outside the centre. Families who want to combine a day of water and play will find four pools at Aquapark Podina, including a pool with three slides and a children’s pool with water attractions for playing.
Arrival options can also play a role in choosing a location. Via Aleksinac, Sokobanja is connected to the main road and rail routes leading from Belgrade through the valleys of the Great Morava and South Morava towards Niš. Regional roads lead via Knjaževac and Boljevac into the Timok region. Niš Constantine the Great Airport is 58 km away. A traditional event has been held from 2 to 7 July since 1994 and includes the collection of medicinal herbs on the slopes of Ozren, Rtanj and Devica, accompanied by expert guides.
If you would like to discover more destinations in the surrounding area, you can find Koprivnica, Kalna, Zaječar, Balta Berilovac, Janja, Rtanj, Jalovik Izvor and Knjaževac here. Sokobanja itself therefore provides a versatile base for a trip where you can balance thermal springs, exercise, culture, regional cuisine and family-oriented excursion destinations.
