Balta Berilovac lies at an altitude of 531 metres at the foot of the Stara Planina. Archaeological finds and oral tradition indicate that the settlement already existed in Roman times. Two rivers flow through the village, and part of the protected Stara Planina Nature Park lies within its territory. At the same time, the village school, church, historic houses and milling technology tell different stories of local history. Balta Berilovac is therefore interesting for travellers who want to experience mountain scenery alongside the cultural traces of a place.

Rivers and Mountain Scenery

The Ćuštica and the Crnovrška flow through Balta Berilovac; their confluence forms the Trgoviški Timok. Part of the protected Stara Planina Nature Park, in Protection Zone III, lies within the village’s territory. It is helpful to distinguish between the locations: the rivers and the part of the protected area are associated with Balta Berilovac, while the marked routes are in the wider surroundings. In the broader region around Babin Zub and the Stara Planina, there are marked and developed hiking, mountain hiking and cycling trails. If you want to combine scenery and activity, these regional trails can provide a separate focus alongside the village’s history.

A Village School as a Window into Local History

The first village school opened in a private house in 1860. The new school building was constructed in 1880 and officially opened in 1882. Lessons were initially taught in Old Church Slavonic and later in Serbian. The two dates distinguish the construction of the new building from its official opening; the sequence of languages adds a dimension of everyday schooling to this architectural chronology. If you are travelling with children, you can tell a clear story through time, from lessons in a private house to the new school building. The Muzej Stare planine Balta Berilovac is part of the Knjaževac Local Museum complex. The grounds of the former school also include a space for traditional shepherds’ games.

Church, Houses and Milling Technology

The Church of All Saints is part of the local folk heritage. It is a single-nave stone building; the churchyard includes a wooden bell tower and a traditional house. The church complex therefore comprises both the religious building and other traditional structures in the yard.

Four nearly identical houses from the early 20th century stand in the hamlet of Minići. They belong to the Morava house type. Their similarity draws attention to a group of related buildings rather than a single house. The history of milling is also tangible: the historic mill building in Balta Berilovac houses a watermill, a fulling mill and a wool carding mill. The working systems and a miller’s residence have been preserved. This brings technical equipment and the miller’s living quarters together in one building.

Traditions and Travel Planning

Since ancient times, a historic route has passed through Balta Berilovac over the Sv. Nikola Pass on the Stara Planina towards Vidin. This former connection adds a route across the mountain to the village’s history.

The traditional “Molitva pod Midžorom” ethno event takes place on the grounds of the former school, which also hosts other educational programmes. The festival is held annually on Đurđevdan, 6 May, in Vrtovac and Balta Berilovac; specific event dates may vary. The part held in Balta Berilovac includes a cultural and artistic programme, whose individual elements may change. If you plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: the history of the school, church and milling heritage offer a cultural perspective; the rivers and protected area connect the village to its landscape, while the routes described are in the wider mountain region. This lets you tailor your search to the kind of holiday you have in mind.
