Koprivnica: Streams and Village History
Accommodation in Koprivnica
If you are looking for a rural place with cultural connections, Koprivnica offers a blend of village landscapes, religious traditions and traces of earlier settlements. Streams shape the layout of the houses; local festivals and historical connections complete the picture. When looking for a holiday rental, you can consider whether this mix of landscape and local history suits your stay.
Churches and festival customs
The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is a religious landmark in the village. An episcopal liturgy was celebrated there on 16 April 2016. Spasovdan is Koprivnica’s village patronal feast. The “Dani Adama Bogosavljevića” is another link between the village and its culture. The event commemorates Adam Bogosavljević, who was born in Koprivnica, and is one of the events celebrating traditional folk creativity in the settlements around Zaječar. One edition of the Dani featured a procession of participants and a communal kolo dance. If this event is important to your travel plans, check in advance whether a suitable date has been scheduled.
The memory of earlier religious customs is also part of local culture. Residents of Koprivnica joined residents of Sumrakovac and Zvezdan in a reconstruction of celebration customs in honour of Saint Nicholas, as practised at the beginning of the 20th century. The KUD Adam Bogosavljević from Koprivnica also took part in this reconstruction. Thus, a named village patronal celebration and a depiction of earlier celebration customs stand side by side as two distinct ways of experiencing religious tradition.
Traces of local history
Koprivnica has appeared on Austrian maps since the beginning of the 18th century. The site of Selishtance lies on the Skrovnica plateau: pottery fragments have been found there, and old Koprivnica was located there. The name Stara Crkva refers to the site of an earlier wooden church roofed with shingles. Koprivnica also lies in an area with numerous traces of Roman culture. Together, maps, finds and named historical sites offer different ways to explore the village’s past.
A local legend tells of a girl in a wedding dress who is known as the “Girl in White”. Thus, stories, alongside archaeological finds and cartographic traces, also form part of Koprivnica’s cultural image.
Streams and rural surroundings
The houses in Koprivnica are mainly situated on the slopes of the Vranjevac stream and partly on the slopes of the Reka stream. Vranjevac flows into the Reka, which runs near its confluence with the Jelašnička Reka. Koprivnica has arable land, meadows and small groves; woodland is found in the Koritar area and in the Timok municipal forest. The route from the main road to Negotin leads through hilly, open and wooded meadows to the village. The road between Zaječar and Negotin runs close to Koprivnica. This makes it possible to distinguish between the houses’ position along the streams and the wider rural landscape: the slopes shape the settlement, while fields, meadows, groves and woodland describe its surroundings.
