Discover Loznica: Culture and History
Accommodation in Loznica
Loznica offers several ways to explore its culture: the building of the Old Pharmacy brings together a cultural monument and the permanent exhibition of the Jadar Museum. The church, library and events offer glimpses of other eras and forms of expression. Walks and hiking round out this cultural profile. You can shape your stay around the balance of museums, local history, events and outdoor activity.
The Old Pharmacy and the Jadar Museum
The Old Pharmacy is a good starting point for exploring Loznica’s cultural history. Its building was declared a cultural monument on 8 December 1986; it also houses the permanent exhibition of the Jadar Museum. The collections cover local life and work from prehistoric times to 1950. Here, one building brings together a historic structure and a broad view of the area’s ways of life and work across the centuries.
The Jadar Museum also hosts around ten temporary exhibitions each year; the exact number may vary. If you plan to make exhibitions a key part of your visit, check the current programme beforehand. This lets you pair your museum visit with a specific exhibition rather than focusing on just one period.
The church and library: different historical layers
The Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God also connects the town’s history with a specific location: it stands in the present-day centre of Loznica, on the site of the former Loznički grad fortress, and was built in 1873. Alongside the Old Pharmacy, it offers another point of historical interest—with a different date of origin and a different connection to the town’s history.
The Vuk Homeland Library adds the history of cultural institutions to this picture. It is Loznica’s oldest cultural institution. Founded in 1868 under the name “Čitalište,” it was a section of the “Podrinska sloga” cultural and educational association. Its history runs from an early cultural association to its present-day events programme, which includes literary evenings, concerts, exhibitions, discussion groups, lectures and stage performances throughout the year. Dates and individual events may vary; check the programme if you have a particular evening in mind.
Art and events
Among the notable cultural institutions is the “Karadžić” Cultural and Artistic Association, founded in 1850. It is considered one of the oldest organised cultural and artistic associations in the Balkans and Europe. The Mića Popović Gallery is a collection of artworks donated to the birthplace of Mića Popović, an academic painter from Loznica. Together, these examples show two different links to cultural history: the long history of an association and an art collection connected with an artist from Loznica.
The two-day “Mićini i Verini dani” event features programmes in visual arts, theatre and film. It was first held in 2001 and is associated with Mića Popović’s birthday on 12 June. The preliminary festivities of the Vukov Sabor also extend beyond a single venue: they were established in 1970 and take place in Loznica, Banja Koviljača, Tršić and Tronoša. Dates and programmes vary from year to year. If you would like to include one of these events in your stay, check the current event dates.
Walks, hiking and getting there
Loznica’s active tourism offer includes walks and hiking. This offers a different focus from museum visits and events, and can add variety to your day. Loznica is also connected by rail: regional train 211 links Ruma, Šabac, Loznica and the state border near Zvornik Novi; passenger services between Šabac and Zvornik have resumed. Loznica has a railway station on this line. Check the current timetable and service status before travelling by train.
These different interests can help guide your choice of holiday apartment. If museums, the library and historic architecture are your main priorities, choose a location in Loznica that suits the places you plan to visit. This way, your choice can match the kind of stay you want.
