Discover Mačva District: Culture, Rivers and Mountains

Mačva District combines a fertile, expansive plain with mountains, rivers, lakes and an unusually rich cultural history. Monasteries, Museums and Living Traditions

Tronoša Monastery offers several cultural points of interest: the complex includes a church, a new konak with a spacious refectory, an exhibition room and a museum dedicated to Vuk’s early school years. According to tradition, its completion in 1317 is associated with King Dragutin and his wife Katarina. The monastery is also associated with the custom of the Ratarske sveće, in which two neighbouring villages present beeswax candles cast on Maundy Thursday. Not far from the monastery is a ten-spout concrete fountain with cold spring water. Local tradition attributes it to the nine Jugović brothers and the old Jug-Bogdan; above the fountain stands a chapel dedicated to Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr.

In Tršić, the complex includes the Museum of Languages and Scripts, a gallery, a guesthouse, a calligraphy workshop, the Museum of Vukov sabor, a writers’ house, a wooden church dedicated to the Archangel Michael, workshops for traditional crafts and the Vuk estate with a memorial house. Vukov sabor is Serbia’s oldest cultural event and has been held since 1933. In summer and on sunny weekends, Tršić is also a popular picnic spot for the people of Loznica. In Crna Bara stands the Hajduk-Stanko Vajat, a cultural monument from the 19th century. The Hajdučko veče event also takes place in Crna Bara and is inspired by the literary work Hajduk Stanko by Janko Veselinović and by the folklore of Mačva.

Historical architecture and unusual spaces also shape the region. The underground city of the Karađorđević dynasty was built in the early 1930s on the orders of King Aleksandar I Karađorđević as a wartime shelter for the dynasty and the government. It consists of 75 rooms and passageways with a total length of around 1.5 kilometres. Visitors can walk through the sequence of underground halls and view the underground royal apartment. Mali Ostrog is also known as the Church of the Holy Cross. The church carved into a cave in Mali Zvornik was probably created between 1932 and 1934.

Memorial Sites in the Mountains and at Historic Locations

On Mount Gučevo, an ossuary commemorates the battles fought at Gučevo during the First World War. It contains the jointly buried remains of Serbian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers. Next to the Gučevo monument is a viewpoint overlooking Podrinje, Pocerina, Semberija and Majevica. Gučevo serves hikers and people seeking recreation as a picnic area; paragliding takes place from its peaks.

Mačkov Kamen was a battlefield during the First World War. It is commemorated by an ossuary made of granite blocks in the form of a chapel with a bell tower. The area around the ossuary is designated as an excursion destination. The Tekeriš memorial complex includes an ossuary and a museum exhibition on the Battle of Cer. The decisive Battle of Cer took place at Tekeriš between 15 and 19 August. In the 1980s, a museum exhibition on the Battle of Mišar was also opened not far from the monument. The Battle of Mišar took place near Mišar on 1 or 13 August 1806 and is regarded as the first victory of the rebels against central Ottoman rule.

The Lake, the Sava and Regional Experiences

Lake Zvornik is used for recreational fishing and has abundant fish stocks. Every spring during the spawning season, the fish ladder at the Zvornik Hydroelectric Power Plant is opened so that fish can travel from the lower Drina to Lake Zvornik and spawn there. It is considered the only fish ladder in the country. The Somovijada fishing competition has been held every summer at Lake Zvornik since 1998. This combination of waterscapes, fishing and a recurring competition particularly appeals to travellers who want to combine relaxed days with a specific regional theme.

The Stari Grad fortress lies on the right bank of the Sava. The area around Stari Grad includes a recreation centre and, directly next to the fortress, a town beach on the Sava. This means that, alongside its historical dimension, spending time by the river is also a central feature. The Moba event takes place every summer near Soko. Serbian children from the diaspora come together there for archaeological research,交流 and to learn about the Serbian language, customs and traditions. The Sovljak artists’ colony has been held in the Sovljak Ethnopark since 1998.

Wellness, Cuisine and Choosing Your Holiday Apartment

Banja Koviljača is home to a modern wellness centre in an old sulphur spa dating from 1908. The Kursalon Palace in Banja Koviljača was built in 1932. Gučevo and Banja Koviljača therefore represent different forms of recreation: a mountainous area with picnicking and paragliding on the one hand, and a place associated with wellness and historic architecture on the other.
