Krupanj Between Rivers, Bridges and Cultural History

Krupanj lies in an impressive broadening of the valley, surrounded by the foothills of the Boranja, Jagodnja and Sokolska mountains. Four fast-flowing streams run through the picturesque settlement and are connected by a network of fifteen bridges. In the town centre, Bogoštica, Zmajevac, Čađavica and Kržava converge to form the Likodra. Those who want to combine a trip with landscapes, history and excursions will therefore find many different starting points here for planning their own itinerary.

Rivers, Mountains and Paths Around Krupanj

Water particularly clearly shapes the character of the town. Bridges and streams give walks their own structure, while the surrounding mountain foothills form the landscape’s backdrop. Krupanj’s sports and leisure facilities include walking and cycling paths. By the end of 2019, around 300 km of signposted hiking, cycling and mushroom-picking trails had been established in the municipality. This makes it easy to distinguish between quiet days in the town, more active pursuits and excursions into the surrounding area when planning your holiday.

The excursion destination of Zmajevac is located 3 km from Krupanj. It can be reached via a paved road as well as footpaths, including routes along the Zmajevac River with rapids and waterfalls. The Kovačević Cave is also located around 6 km from Krupanj. This protected natural phenomenon includes stalactites, stalagmites, lakes and colonies of bats. From Krupanj, Jagodnja can most conveniently be reached via a paved road in the direction of Mačkov Kamen.

Cultural History from Roman Heritage to the 20th Century

Traces of early history can already be found at the entrance to the town: remains of a Roman settlement and the remnants of a building known as Villa Rustica have been preserved there. In the Middle Ages, silver mining made Krupanj an important mining town; Dubrovnik caravan routes passed through the town. This combination of mineral resources and trade routes gives the town’s history particular depth.

Krupanj itself is also home to several remarkable buildings. The Dom kulture Biblioteka “Politika” is considered a monumental work by the architect Ivan Antić. The Old Church of the Ascension of the Lord was built in 1842. The Memorial Church of the Ascension of the Lord has an ossuary for the fallen warriors from Mačkov Kamen and the surrounding area. Its foundation was laid on 22 September 1920, and the church was brought under a roof in 1928.

Another distinctive building is the Old Pharmacy, also known as the Villa of Pero Despić. It is a state-protected building and was constructed between 1899 and 1900 for Aca and Pero Despić from Vienna. Its “German-style” construction from bricks and wooden beams makes it a special historic detail in the townscape. Every year in April, Lazareva subota, also known as Vrbica, takes place in the municipality of Krupanj.
