Šabac brings together several travel interests: cultural history, urban promenades, events and the Sava. Its story spans everything from a museum with two clearly distinct dates to a swimming marathon whose route ends in Šabac. Which of these aspects you want to shape your trip can also guide your search for a suitable holiday apartment in Šabac.

Cultural history in the cityscape

The Narodni Museum Šabac was founded on 11 January 1955. It is housed in the former Šabac Lower Gymnasium building, constructed in 1857. The two dates represent different chapters: 1857 marks the building’s construction, while 1955 marks the museum’s founding. They offer a concrete introduction to Šabac’s cultural history.

Another notable cultural landmark is Gospodar Jevremova Street. It is a spatial cultural-historical ensemble and a unique protected area with architectural and significant historical and urban-planning value. In 2006, it was designated a cultural-historical ensemble of exceptional importance. At the same time, it remains Šabac’s main promenade. Its protected status and its role as the city’s central promenade are therefore equally important to its significance.

The Oktobarski Salon also anchors Šabac in cultural history: it is the oldest salon in Serbia, and its tradition began in 1954. Alongside this, those interested in cultural traditions can find a different focus in the Čivijada, held every September in Šabac before the Šabac Fair. Since 1968, it has been held under the motto of a fair of humour and satire. If you would like to plan your trip around the Čivijada, take the September dates into account and check the latest event dates.

The Bazaar of Old and Artistic Crafts gives numerous artisans and hobbyists the opportunity to present their work and skills. Alongside the city’s cultural institutions, this also highlights craftsmanship.

The Sava and different travel experiences

The Sava gives Šabac another point of reference. River shipping connects the city with Belgrade; via the Danube waterway system, it is connected to all the Danube countries. The International Jarak–Šabac Swimming Marathon offers a very different perspective on the river. Its route follows the Sava from the village of Jarak in Syrmia to “Stari grad” beach in Šabac; the stated distance is 18 km and 880 m. The programme also includes a cooking competition in preparing fish stew dishes. The water connection, sporting route and culinary event each offer a different focus.

The Stari Grad Fortress lies on the right bank of the Sava, about 1 km from Šabac city centre. The area around the fortress has been transformed into a recreation centre. The approximate distance gives you a sense of the location for planning, without specifying a particular walking time.

Discover science and choose accommodation to suit

Nauke Šabac Park offers science activities for all age groups, starting with the youngest children in kindergarten. The project equips schoolyards with suitable installations to serve as outdoor laboratories. There, students can observe and reflect on natural phenomena and scientific laws. The science theme therefore ranges from activities for different age groups to a specific outdoor learning format.

Organised visits to Nauke Park must be arranged with the Centre for Professional Development five days in advance. Confirm the arrangements before booking a group visit.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Šabac, it helps to have a particular travel focus: would you like to prioritise cultural history and promenades, plan around a September event, or focus especially on the Sava? Compare the accommodation’s exact location with the places and activities you plan to visit.
