Tula Oblast offers a wide variety of discoveries: in Tula, interactive exhibitions bring the Battle of Kulikovo Field and traditional crafts to life; elsewhere, the themes range from Tolstoy’s favorite walking spots to an estate designed by Vasily Polenov and the colorful lakes of Konduki. So, when planning your trip, the first question is what you want to focus on: cultural history, literature and design, or the landscape?

History and Crafts in Tula

At the Tula Antiquities Museum in Tula, the exhibition “The Tale of the Battle on Kulikovo Field” explores the Battle of Kulikovo Field. In interactive areas, visitors can weave a piece of chain mail, try on armor, and learn how to read chronicle miniatures.

The exhibition “Secrets of Tula Craftsmen” in the same museum takes a different approach. It features a pottery workshop, a blacksmith’s workshop, and household objects from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Here, the focus is on crafts and everyday objects rather than the battle. You can choose between these different themes: the battle and its portrayal, or workshops and historical household items.

Tolstoy’s Walking Spots and Estates

From May to October, visitors can take a guided walk through the central part of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum-Reserve. The tour covers Tolstoy’s favorite places for daily walks, the local flora and fauna, and the history of Tula’s defensive lines and Tolstoy’s plantings. Alongside literary connections, nature and regional history are also in focus. Leo Tolstoy’s personal library was included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register—another notable aspect of his cultural heritage.

Design also plays a central role at Polenovo Estate: the artist Vasily Polenov designed all of the buildings himself. For architecture enthusiasts, the key point is that Polenov designed every building, not just one.

Monastyrshchino and the Landscapes of Konduki

The museum and monument dedicated to the heroes of the Battle of Kulikovo Field are located in the village of Monastyrshchino, in Kimovsk District, Tula Oblast. The Kulikovo Field Horse Yard is also in this village. Monastyrshchino is therefore a distinct destination for travelers interested in the battle and the places associated with it.

The Romantsevskie Mountains, also known as Konduki, are located in Uzlovsky District and are a former open-pit coal mine. They are also known for their colorful lakes and picturesque views. Their history of use and distinctive landscape give Konduki a different focus from the region’s museums and cultural sites. If you would rather focus on landscapes than exhibitions during your trip, this is a destination in its own right.

When looking for a vacation rental in Tula Oblast, it helps to have a clear focus for your trip: first consider whether exhibitions, a guided walk in Yasnaya Polyana, or the landscapes of Konduki will shape your visit.
