In Kurkinskiy District, you can encounter the history of the Battle of Kulikovo Field in different forms: as an exhibition, as a memorial site overlooking the battlefield, and as the subject of a children’s museum. There is also a local history museum and a church ensemble on Red Hill. A visit thus takes you from historical collections and interactive exhibitions to architecture and panoramic views.

Battle history at the Red Hill Memorial

The Museum of the Battle of Kulikovo displays exhibits on the Russian principalities of the 14th century, the capital of the Golden Horde, Sarai, and the forces that clashed on Kulikovo Field. The exhibition thus brings together political centers and military history, rather than considering the battle on its own.

The Red Hill Memorial includes a column with a monument to Dmitry Donskoy, described as the main symbol of the Battle of Kulikovo and the victory. Next to the column monument is an observation platform overlooking the battlefield. The memorial site and panorama give the historical subject a tangible sense of place.

Hands-on history at the children’s museum

The children’s museum “Odin v pole ne voin” offers eight different games. Each tells its own story about the battle and its heroes. The individual stations therefore offer different perspectives while focusing on the same historical subject.

In a monk’s cell, visitors learn why monasteries were centers of learning in the Middle Ages and can browse an old manuscript. In the “Corridor of Time,” they solve tasks to distinguish Russian weapons from those of the Horde. They also learn about the materials used in the 14th century to make armor, chain mail, swords, and bows. Those especially interested in everyday knowledge and historical objects will find a different approach here than in a collection of traditional exhibits.

Church and local history museum

On Red Hill, the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, built in the early 20th century to a design by Alexey Shchusev, forms an ensemble with the column monument. According to official visitor information, the church is open to visitors daily and free of charge; check the current visiting conditions before your trip.

The Kurkinsky Local History Museum was established on January 1, 2004, by converting a room devoted to military and regional history at the Department of Culture of the Kurkinskiy District administration. Its collection comprises 1,760 objects; this number may change. Its founding date and collection give the museum a distinct focus on regional history alongside the history of the battle.

More cultural subjects in Tula Oblast

The wider travel destination of Tula Oblast also offers its own cultural subjects. At the “Tulskie drevnosti” Museum in Tula, the exhibition “Skazanie o Mamaevom poboishche” explores the Battle of Kulikovo Field. In interactive areas, visitors can weave a piece of chain mail, try on armor, and learn to read miniature illustrations in chronicles. The exhibition “Sekrety tulskikh masterov” focuses on a pottery workshop, a blacksmith’s workshop, and household objects from the 17th to 19th centuries.

At the Yasnaya Polyana Museum-Estate, visitors can take a guided walk through the central part of the estate from May to October. During the walk, they learn about Tolstoy’s favorite places for daily walks, the local flora and fauna, as well as the history of the Tula defensive lines and Tolstoy’s plantings. These examples broaden the perspective on the region; they are distinct subjects within Tula Oblast.

When searching for a vacation rental in Kurkinskiy District, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the history of the battle and its memorial sites, the museum’s educational activities, or the architecture. If you also plan to visit other cultural attractions in Tula Oblast, consider them as separate regional destinations.
