Demidov: Remembrance, Merchant Route and Cucumber Festival
Accommodation in Demidov
Demidov brings together memorial sites, a route through the city’s pre-revolutionary history, and a cucumber festival. When looking for a vacation rental, you can consider whether to focus your stay mainly on the city’s themes or also include other cultural and natural destinations in the broader destination of Smolensk Oblast. The places and experiences below offer different points of focus.
Remembrance and history in Demidov
The Zhuravli memorial complex commemorates Demidov residents who died during the Great Patriotic War. On the central square, an obelisk commemorates Soviet soldiers who liberated the city from the German fascist occupiers on September 21, 1943. On the western outskirts of the city, a T-34 tank monument commemorates soldiers of the 43rd Army who liberated Demidov from the German fascist occupiers on the same day. Together, the three memorial sites offer different points of focus: remembrance of the residents and the liberation of the city, with one site explicitly referring to the 43rd Army.
Merchant houses and cucumber festival
The “Porechye – Merchant Land” route explores the city’s pre-revolutionary history through architectural monuments. These include merchant houses on Kommunisticheskaya and Prosveshcheniya Streets. The houses named along the route give it a specific architectural focus: here, history comes to life through the city’s buildings and streets. The Demidovsky Ogurchik cucumber festival offers a different focus, with market and exhibition stalls as well as cucumber tastings. The two themes are clearly distinct: the route focuses on city history and architecture, while the festival centers on stalls and tastings.
Other cultural destinations in Smolensk Oblast
The Gnezdovo archaeological complex is located in the broader destination of Smolensk Oblast. It is the largest complex of archaeological monuments in Russia and Europe dating from the period when the Old Russian state was emerging. Today, about 2,500 burial mounds and a settlement remain there; the complex is protected by the state as an archaeological monument of federal significance. Its archaeological perspective differs from Demidov’s memorial sites and merchant houses, focusing instead on the early history of the Old Russian state.
Also in Smolensk Oblast, in Vyazemsky District, is the A. S. Griboyedov “Khmelita” State Historical, Cultural and Natural Museum-Reserve. The Khmelita estate has been owned by the Griboyedov family since 1680 and is at the heart of the museum-reserve. Gnezdovo and Khmelita thus offer two distinct historical themes for exploring the region: archaeological monuments and an estate with its family history.
Nature trails in the broader destination
The “To the Sources” circular trail starts in the village of Stary Dvor. Two observation points were established at Lakes Svyatets and Sapsho in 2023–2024. A track for mobile apps such as Geotracker or MAPS.ME helps visitors follow the ecological trail independently. Its starting village, circular route, and observation points make the trail easy to navigate, while the lakes mark two specific stops along the nature experience.
The barefoot trail in Boroviki offers a different kind of walking experience: it has 14 sections, each six meters long, with different natural surfaces to walk on barefoot. At the end, you can wash your feet and, if you wish, stroll through the Aptekarskiy Sad (Apothecary Garden). While “To the Sources” is described as a circular trail with observation points and an app track, the barefoot trail focuses on the changing surfaces.
