Przhevalskoye offers tangible points of interest for a trip combining recent history and nature: the Museum of Partisan Glory depicts the lives of partisans, and a complex of enclosures established in 2014 is part of the history of Przewalski’s horses in the area. A described radial trail adds a route with clearly specified endpoints to these themes.

Museum and Partisan History

The Museum of Partisan Glory in Przhevalskoye features an exhibition about the combat operations of partisan units in Smolensk Oblast during the war. A model of a dugout illustrates the lives of the partisans: visitors can see original everyday objects, weapons, and the “Belka” radio. The exhibition thus combines a historical overview with a portrayal of specific objects from daily life.

In the broader historical context of Smolensk Oblast, the exhibition also covers the formation under the command of N. Z. Kolyada (“Bati”) and special units of the 4th Shock Army and the 43rd Army, which liberated the Smolensk region. This context broadens the perspective on the region’s wartime history.

Przewalski’s Horses and Radial Trail

A complex of enclosures was established in Przhevalskoye in 2014, and several Przewalski’s horses were brought there from Khotynetsky Nature Park. If you plan to visit the enclosure, check the current conditions in advance.

The “K loshadyam Przhevalskogo” radial trail starts on a dirt road near the entrance to the N. M. Przhevalsky sanatorium, beyond the bus stop. It ends at the entrance to “Konny Dvor v Przhevalskom.” Downloadable tracks provide guidance; check the current trail conditions before setting out. The specified start and end points help you fit the route into your day’s plans.

More Nature and Culture in Smolensk Oblast

The wider travel region of Smolensk Oblast includes Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park. It was established on April 15, 1992, in the Demidovsky and Dukhovshchinsky districts to protect unique natural areas and serve recreational, educational, scientific, and cultural purposes. On the “K istokam” ecological trail, the loop route starts in the village of Stary Dvor. Two viewpoints by Lakes Svyatets and Sapsho were established in 2023–2024; a track for apps such as Geotreker or MAPS.ME helps visitors explore the route independently.

Another nature experience in the region is the barefoot trail in Boroviki: it comprises 14 sections, each six metres long, with different natural surfaces to walk on barefoot. At the end, you can wash your feet and, if you like, take a walk through Aptekarsky Sad. The “Poozerye bez barierov” ecological trail was created in 2017 for people with health conditions and starts near the building of the “Baklanovo” Ecocentre.

Archaeology offers a different perspective on the past. Today, about 2,500 burial mounds and a settlement remain at the Gnyozdovo complex in Smolensk Oblast. It is considered the largest complex of archaeological monuments in Russia and Europe from the period when the Old Russian state was emerging, and it is protected as a monument of national, federal significance.

The “Stargrad” ethnographic village offers another cultural focus in Smolensk Oblast. A guided tour introduces visitors to the way of life of the ancient Slavs and displays everyday objects, weapons, and clothing. Visits are possible only as part of a guided group. The extended programme includes, among other things, the “Babiy kut” workshop on traditional women’s crafts, where visitors can make souvenirs, and “Polevaya kuznya,” where they can stamp coins and make chainmail. These extended activities must be arranged in advance.

Choose a Focus for Your Holiday Apartment Search

If the museum, local history, and radial trail are your main interests, you can make Przhevalskoye your own focus when searching for a holiday apartment. If you also want to include nature or cultural attractions from Smolensk Oblast, plan your accommodation around the regional focus of your trip. This way, your search starts with the experiences that matter for your stay, rather than a general list of options.
