Smolensk Oblast: Archaeology, Estate Heritage and National Park
Accommodation in Smolensk Oblast
In Smolensk Oblast, you can explore archaeological history, a historic estate and nature experiences. Gnyozdovo has about 2,500 burial mounds and a settlement that have been preserved; in Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park, nature trails invite you to explore the landscape on foot. Other highlights include the Khmelita estate, tours of the Stargrad ethnographic village and activities at the Katyn Memorial. When choosing a holiday rental, it’s worth first deciding which of these themes will be the main focus of your trip.
Gnyozdovo: an archaeological highlight
The Gnyozdovo archaeological complex includes around 2,500 preserved burial mounds and a settlement. It is considered the largest complex of archaeological monuments in Russia and Europe dating from the emergence of the Old Russian state. Its scale and preserved settlement make it particularly significant for anyone interested in the region’s early history. As an archaeological monument of state and federal significance, the complex is protected by the state.
Khmelita estate and its history
The A. S. Griboyedov “Khmelita” State Historical, Cultural and Natural Museum-Reserve is located in Vyazemsky District, Smolensk Oblast. It lies 260 kilometres from Moscow, 200 kilometres from Smolensk and 37 kilometres from Vyazma. These three reference points help you locate the reserve on a map. The Khmelita estate has been owned by the Griboyedov family since 1680 and is the centrepiece of the museum-reserve. If you’d like to include historic sites in your travel plans, you’ll find both an estate with a long family history and the central site of a museum-reserve here.
Nature trails in Smolenskoye Poozerye
Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park was established on 15 April 1992 in the Demidovsky and Dukhovshchinsky districts. Its purpose is to protect unique natural complexes for recreational, educational, scientific and cultural purposes. The “K istokam” nature trail is a circular route that starts in the village of Stary Dvor. A track for mobile apps such as Geotreker or MAPS.ME helps you follow the route independently. In 2023–2024, two viewpoints were installed at Lakes Svyatets and Sapsho.
Another trail has a distinct focus: the “Poozerye bez baryerov” nature trail was created in 2017 for people with limited health and starts near the “Baklanovo” Ecocentre building. The barefoot trail in Boroviki is designed differently. It has 14 sections, each six metres long, with different natural surfaces to walk on barefoot. At the end, you can wash your feet and, if you wish, stroll through the Aptekarsky Garden. The national park therefore offers several distinct options: a loop with an app-based track, a trail intended for a specifically stated audience, and a short barefoot trail with a variety of surfaces.
The national park also offers annual winter excursions to a feeding site at the biotechnical complex. If this seasonal experience is important to your trip, check the current dates in advance. These activities complement the trails and viewpoints with a guided visit offered at a particular time of year.
Tours and hands-on activities in Stargrad
A tour of the “Stargrad” ethnographic village introduces visitors to the way of life of the ancient Slavs and showcases everyday objects, weapons and clothing. Visits are possible only as part of an excursion group. The extended tour programme includes the “Babiy kut” workshop on traditional women’s crafts, where participants can make souvenirs themselves. At the “Polevaya kuznya” workshop, they can mint coins and make chain mail. The programme also includes the “Srednevekovy tir” area, where visitors can shoot a bow and slingshot and throw axes and javelins.
The extended excursion programme also includes an on-water activity in the Viking oak boat “Fornkor”. Participants can sail and row on one of the national park’s deepest lakes. A lunch based on old recipes is also part of the extended programme: historic dishes from the maritime and marching and field kitchens are served, prepared in cauldrons over an open fire. Arrange the extended programme in advance and enquire about lunch availability when planning. All visits to Stargrad require joining an excursion group.
Tours at the Katyn Memorial
At the Katyn Memorial, group and individual tours are offered around the grounds, through the displays and to the exhibitions. They can be requested in advance or on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of your visit. Check the current opening hours and booking details before your visit. The arrangements also differ between these activities: the track for “K istokam” supports independent visits, Stargrad can only be visited as part of an excursion group, and group and individual tours are available at the memorial.
If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Smolensk Oblast, start by choosing based on the experiences that matter most to your stay: archaeological history, a historic estate, nature trails or guided cultural activities. This gives your search a concrete picture of your trip, rather than a general idea of what accommodation in the area might offer.
