Sortavala lies on the shore of Lepinjärvi Bay on Lake Ladoga. More than 200 cultural heritage sites have been preserved in the city, mostly architectural monuments; the number may change over time. Architecture, museums and Wakkosalmi Park give a stay a variety of cultural and scenic highlights.

Architecture and City History

Individual buildings reveal different periods and styles of construction. Leander House was built in 1905 in the National Romantic style, based on a design by Eliel Saarinen. Two years later, Siitonen’s Merchant House was built, an example of Art Nouveau in Western Europe. The building housing the Regional Museum of Northern Lake Ladoga also belongs to this architectural context: it was built in 1900 in the National Romantic style, based on a design by architects Gustavsson and Tullman. St. Nicholas Church was designed by Nikolai Grebenko and dates from 1873. The building of the United Bank of the Nordic Countries was built in 1913, based on a design by Finnish architect Uno Werner Ullberg.

In 2018, Sortavala became the first city in Karelia to be included on the list of historic settlements of regional significance. These places are of particular importance to the history and culture of the Republic of Karelia. Another tangible connection to cultural history is the Rune Singer Monument: it was erected in 1935 to mark the centenary of the first publication of the Karelian-Finnish epic “Kalevala,” when Sortavala was part of Finland. These historical points of reference give a walk through the city a range of themes, from architecture to the history of the epic.

Museums and Art Collections

The Regional Museum of Northern Lake Ladoga is Sortavala’s main local history museum. Its permanent exhibition covers life in the region from the first settlements to the Soviet era. The collection also includes more than 400 mineral exhibits. The museum thus combines a broad historical overview with a dedicated look at the region’s natural history.

Other exhibition venues focus on different themes. The “Zolotoy vek SSSR” Museum is dedicated to the work of painter Boris Semenov; its exhibition includes more than 200 works and offers insights into the heyday of the USSR. More than 500 works are on display at the Kronid Gogolev Exhibition Hall: wood carvings, paintings, graphic art and small sculptures. Those comparing Sortavala’s cultural offerings will find a range of perspectives here—from regional history and minerals to painting and works in various art forms.

Wakkosalmi Park: Forest Park and Musical History

Wakkosalmi Park is located on a hill in the western part of Sortavala and is described as a forest park. A path bypasses the staircase, which is described as too steep. The park is home to the Singing Field, an open-air concert venue with acoustics that work without microphones or amplifiers. Concerts, Sortavala City Day, festivals and children’s events are held there regularly. Dates vary; if a concert or festival is important to your plans, check the relevant dates.

The park’s musical history goes back further: festivals featuring local ensembles have been held there since 1883. The All-Finnish Choir Festival was held in Sortavala in 1896, 1906, 1926 and 1935. These historical dates add a sense of perspective to the types of events held today, but do not replace a current events calendar.

Interactive Exhibitions at the “Bastion” Historical Park

The “Bastion” Historical Park combines a museum with an interactive event venue. Its exhibitions include a Viking museum with everyday objects and weapons, as well as a dedicated room on the history of Soviet-Finnish relations. The Military Glory Museum covers the military history of the northern Lake Ladoga region; it includes a reconstructed dugout.

Workshops are also part of what the park offers: activities in archery and martial arts, as well as blacksmithing, pottery and weaving workshops. Woodworking is available in summer. If you plan to take part in a workshop, check the current dates in advance. This makes it easy to tailor a visit to the Historical Park to an interest in exhibitions or hands-on activities.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Sortavala, the focus of your trip can be a useful starting point: architecture and collections offer a different experience from the park, music events and interactive activities.
