In Kostomuksha, memorial sites in the city centre sit alongside a city route with various stops. Another option in addition to the city sites is Siniranta Water Park. This mix gives you concrete points of reference for deciding whether to explore the city sites, plan a visit to the water park or combine both.

Monuments and the City Route in Kostomuksha

The monument to Alexei Kosygin and Urho Kalevi Kekkonen stands at 1 Lenin Square in the city centre. It was officially unveiled on 14 September 2013. Another memorial is the Druzhba Monument, which commemorates Soviet-Finnish cooperation and is made of granite and bronze.

The “Kostomuksha – Pearl of Karelia” city route passes the Druzhba Palace of Culture, the “Fallen for Soviet Power” monument, the memorial to the discoverers, the Druzhba Monument and the Orthodox Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. The route therefore brings together several different city sites: a palace of culture, memorials, monuments and a church. Those interested in Kostomuksha’s memorial sites will find several named stops here, rather than just a single monument.

Swimming and Other Areas at the Water Park

Siniranta Water Park has a swimming pool with four 25-metre lanes, a hydromassage area, a children’s pool with a slide, a sauna, a Turkish bath (hammam) and a solarium. This includes both lanes for swimming and other bathing and heat facilities. Check whether the water park is currently open before your visit.

This distinction helps you identify the desired location more clearly when searching for a holiday apartment, without treating city visits and regional destinations as one and the same.

More Destinations in the Republic of Karelia

Looking beyond Kostomuksha to the Republic of Karelia, you will find distinctive cultural and natural destinations. The Kizhi Open-Air Museum features 89 monuments of traditional wooden architecture, including old chapels and houses, mills, granaries, threshing barns and drying racks. Visitors can tour the interior of the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and of peasant houses; traditional peasant crafts are demonstrated in the houses. The Kizhi Pogost is an architectural ensemble that includes the world’s only multi-domed wooden Church of the Transfiguration.

The petroglyphs also add a distinctive cultural dimension to the Republic of Karelia. The World Heritage site of the Onega and White Sea petroglyphs comprises 4,500 Neolithic rock carvings. The Onega petroglyphs include more than 1,200 figures in Pudozhsky District; most are located on the central capes of Pery Nos, Besov Nos and Kladovets. The White Sea petroglyphs mainly depict hunting and sailing scenes, along with related equipment, as well as animal and human footprints.

A general tour of Kivach Nature Reserve includes an outdoor walk to Kivach Waterfall and visits to the dendrological collection and the nature museum. The waterfall is on the Suna River in the central part of the Republic of Karelia and has a drop of 10.7 metres; after the Rhine Falls, it is Europe’s second-largest lowland waterfall. A 1,000-metre circular trail runs through a wooded area along the banks of the Suna near the excursion zone. The tour lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. Contact the operator in advance for information on the conditions and booking of the general tour.
