In Skornyakovo, estate history meets a distinctive riverside setting. Skornyakovo-Arkhangelskoye Estate lies at the confluence of the Don and Bystraya Sosna rivers. There is also a historic church and a range of ways to explore the area—from a guided tour to routes on the water or on land.

Estate history and a dated detail about the church

The history of Skornyakovo-Arkhangelskoye Estate goes back more than three centuries; it was first mentioned in 1680. In Skornyakovo, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel also bears a date: 1812. The two dates serve different purposes—1680 is the estate’s first recorded mention, while 1812 is the date associated with the church. Together with the estate’s location at the confluence, these details offer several concrete points of interest for a stay focused on local history and the river landscape.

Guided tours, kayaking, cycling and hiking

Guided tours of the estate can be booked; you must enquire at reception in advance. The operator advertises a kayaking trip on the Don from the Malvy guest houses to the estate. The operator has also developed cycling and hiking routes in the area around the estate or the Malvy guest houses. The activities are clearly distinct: a tour of the estate, a kayaking route with a specified starting point and destination, and routes for getting around on land.

If you plan to take a guided tour, enquire at reception in advance. If you want to include a kayaking trip as a fixed part of your itinerary, confirm directly with the operator whether it is currently running. When choosing your holiday rental, it may help to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip: the estate’s historical attractions, a kayaking trip on the Don, or cycling and hiking routes.

More nature and cultural attractions in Lipetsk Oblast

Lipetsk Oblast as a whole also has its own attractions for nature and culture enthusiasts. The Devonian limestone cliffs of the Galichya Gora Nature Reserve were shaped by water and wind and rise above the right bank of the Don in the centre of the oblast. The reserve consists of six separate sections surrounded by developed and agricultural land. It protects characteristic forest-steppe communities and groups of rock-dwelling plants on limestone outcrops in the valleys of the Don, Bystraya Sosna and their tributaries.

The Lipetsk Regional Museum of Natural History is located at the reserve’s central estate and is visited by thousands of day-trippers each year. The open-air area includes an alpine plant garden with rare plant species, a bird of prey breeding station and a medicinal herb garden. Check access to these outdoor facilities before visiting.

A different perspective is offered by Kudykina Gora, a recreational, landscape and dendrological park in the Zadonsky District of Lipetsk Oblast. It is home to the sculpture “Zmey Gorynych”: the three-headed figure is 15 metres tall and has a pointed tail, claws and scales. The oblast’s cultural attractions also include Yelets lace, which is listed among seven ancient crafts and traditions in the register of intangible cultural heritage, and the annual “Zvonari” bell-ringing festival, held in Solidarność. Check the dates for the current edition before travelling to the festival.
