Gryazi brings together a distinctive railway station history, local heritage, memorial sites and a landscaped riverside park on the Matyra. The city offers a range of cultural and landscape themes to consider when planning a trip: historic buildings and collections sit alongside memorial sites and the riverbank. You can think about which focus best suits your trip when choosing where to stay.

Railway Station History and Change

The Gryazi station building was built in 1883. During its reconstruction from 2001 to 2008, additions from the 1930s were removed and the original design of the façades and interiors was partially restored. This included restoring the original appearance of the cast-iron columns. In 2002, the building was added to the register of identified cultural heritage sites in Lipetsk Oblast. The different dates tell the story of its construction, later changes and efforts to recover elements of its earlier design.

St. Nicholas Church offers another historical timeline: it was built in 1905, closed in 1932 and reopened in 1992. Together with the station's history, it shows the different ways Gryazi's past can be explored—through the architectural history of a railway station or the eventful history of a church building.

Local Heritage and Culture

The Gryazi Local History Museum is part of the city's Centre for Cultural Development. Its collection contains around 6,000 exhibits, covering the history of the old city and district, heroes of the Second World War and Gryazi station. It also includes an art collection featuring works by local artists, applied arts, sculptures and graphic art, as well as documents and coins relating to the history and culture of the region. The collection thus brings together local history, art and regional heritage.

The Centre for Cultural Development has a modern 500-seat auditorium for concerts, performances and official celebrations. It is the main cultural and leisure complex of Gryazinsky District. When planning your trip, keep in mind that performing arts and cultural events are also among the themes that define Gryazi, alongside its historic buildings and collections.

Memorial Sites in the Alley of Heroes

The Alley of Heroes square was created to mark the 55th anniversary of Victory and opened on May 9, 2000. A monument to defenders of the Fatherland who died in wars, armed conflicts and military operations was erected at its centre in 2023. These two dates mark different chapters in the site's history of remembrance.

Another monument in Gryazi is dedicated to the ER773-50 steam locomotive. It is also colloquially known as “Requiem for the Steam Locomotive” or “Echo.” Alongside the station's history, it adds a distinct note: here, the railway is remembered not only through its buildings but also as part of local memory.

Dobrobereg on the Matyra

For those who want to include scenery and water when choosing a destination, Gryazi offers a different focus in “Dobrobereg.” The modern landscaped promenade and park are on the right bank of the Matyra River. This riverside setting complements the city's historic and cultural sites with a designed waterfront landscape.

Nature in Lipetsk Oblast

Beyond Gryazi, Lipetsk Oblast offers distinct nature and landscape attractions. The Galichya Gora Nature Reserve protects characteristic forest-steppe communities and plants that grow on rocks at Devonian limestone outcrops in the valleys of the Don, the Bystraya Sosna and their tributaries. It consists of six separate sections surrounded by developed and cultivated land. On the right bank of the Don, there are also Devonian limestone cliffs shaped by water and wind. This creates a clear distinction when deciding where to travel: Gryazi's railway history, collections and memorial sites sit alongside the nature and landscapes of Lipetsk Oblast.
