Lipetsk Oblast offers a variety of reasons to explore: striking Devonian limestone cliffs on the Don, nature and landscape parks, and regional craft and cultural traditions. When planning a trip, you can first decide whether to focus on natural history and landscapes, a specific excursion itinerary, or culture. These interests can also provide useful guidance when looking for the right place to stay in a holiday apartment.

Limestone Landscapes and Special Parks

The cliffs of “Galichya Gora” lie on the right bank of the Don, in the centre of the oblast. Water and wind have shaped the Devonian limestone formations. The nature reserve was the first in the Central Black Earth Region and is one of the smallest nature reserves in the world. It consists of six separate sections, surrounded by developed and agricultural land.

The protected area includes characteristic forest-steppe communities and groups of rock-dwelling plants. They grow on Devonian limestone outcrops in the valleys of the Don, the Bystraya Sosna and their tributaries. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by the cliffs themselves: the protected habitats and their location in different river valleys are also part of the character of “Galichya Gora”.

“Kudykina Gora” in Zadonsky District has a different focus: the park is described as a recreational, landscape and dendrological park. Its striking sculpture “Zmey Gorynych” is a 15-metre-high, three-headed figure with a pointed tail, claws and scales. Comparing the two destinations highlights different themes for planning a trip: one features a nature reserve and limestone habitats; the other, parkland and a striking sculpture.

Natural History and Excursions

The Lipetsk Regional Museum of Natural History is located on the central estate of the nature reserve. Thousands of day-trippers visit it every year. Its outdoor area includes a collection of rare alpine plants, a breeding station for birds of prey and a medicinal herb garden. If these outdoor areas are important to your visit, check their current accessibility before travelling.

For those who want a guided exploration to be the focus, the “Argamach” Archaeological Park offers another option: visitors can take excursions along the “Gornaya strana v miniatyure” eco-trail. This is a different approach from visiting a natural history museum or exploring the protected landscapes of “Galichya Gora”. You can therefore choose according to the kind of experience you would like to have that day.

Crafts, Toy Art and Regional Culture

Yelets lace is one of the seven traditional crafts and practices of Lipetsk Oblast listed in the register of intangible cultural heritage. It offers a cultural counterpoint to the nature and landscape themes, making a regional craft tradition a focus of its own for your trip.

The centre of Romanov toy art is located in the village of Troitskoye in Lipetsky District. The “Romanovskie posidelki” programme includes traditional folk games, tea and two workshops: one on clay animals and the other on textile dolls. The programme is designed for mixed groups and is of interest to both adults and children. As programme details may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before travelling.

The annual “Zvonari” bell-ringing festival also offers a distinctive way to experience regional culture. It takes place in the settlement of Solidarność and brings together leading masters of this ancient art. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Another cultural monument is the surviving mill complex on the Vorgol River in Yeletsky District. The associated estate has not survived. Nikolai Ivanovich Taldykin created the mill complex and estate; in 2018, the entire architectural ensemble was recognised as a cultural heritage site of regional significance. The buildings are privately owned and are not in use.

Choosing the Right Focus for Your Holiday Apartment

The destinations described here cater to different travel interests: protected limestone landscapes, a natural history museum, excursions, crafts, toy art and an annual cultural festival. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to decide first which of these themes you want to shape your trip. Those who primarily want to experience nature and natural history will have different priorities from those who want to focus on a cultural programme or regional traditions. Once you have chosen a focus, you can select a location for your accommodation that suits your excursion plans.
