Kholuy: Lacquer Miniatures, Embroidery and Churches
Accommodation in Kholuy
Kholuy combines lacquer miniatures and embroidery with museums, churches and a riverside promenade. This makes the town interesting for travelers who want to learn about handicrafts not only as exhibits, but also how they are made. There are also collections and historic buildings that offer further insights into the art and history of Kholuy. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would like to focus on hands-on crafts, museums, architectural history or a walk.
Create your own lacquer miniatures
At the Kholuy Art Factory for Lacquer Miniatures, master artisans create their works from cardboard, clay, stones and paints. Visitors can take part. In the Kholuy painting workshop, an experienced artist guides participants, and the necessary materials are provided. You paint a blank in the style of a Kholuy lacquer miniature and turn it into your own souvenir. The operator currently offers the workshop as part of its excursion program.
The art factory therefore offers more than a glimpse of finished lacquer miniatures: the workshop takes you from the blank to a piece you have decorated yourself. If you are interested in this hands-on experience of the craft, you can make it a special focus of your trip to Kholuy.
Embroidery: tradition and handwork
You can experience another craft tradition at the Kholuy Embroidery Cooperative. Visitors can see the revival of the old embroidery tradition there; the pieces are made entirely by hand. Kholuy embroidery uses drawn-thread work, satin stitch and Richelieu embroidery. The craft of drawn-thread embroidery has been known in Kholuy since the 17th century. Alongside lacquer miniatures, there are several distinct techniques and a long local history of craftsmanship.
Museums offering different perspectives
The Kholuy State Museum of Art has more than 5,000 exhibits, and its exhibition is regularly updated. The house museum of Vasily Dmitriyevich Puzanov-Molev tells the story of the life of the founder of Kholuy lacquer miniatures, as well as the history of Kholuy and the country. The collection includes simple tools used to create his works, pieces by the artist and personal belongings. While the art museum offers an extensive exhibition, the house museum focuses on one artist and his life story.
Churches and historic details
The church complex in Kholuy, built in the mid-18th century, consists of the summer Church of the Trinity and the winter Church of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple. The complex preserves old icons dating from the 16th to the 19th century, as well as distinctive deacon doors. The Vvedenskaya Church remained open during the Soviet era, when services were held there. Together, these details offer different insights into Kholuy’s church history: from the makeup of the complex to its furnishings and the historic use of one of its churches.
Riverside promenade and festival
At the riverside promenade named after Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky, you can take a walk, sit on wooden benches and admire the rural landscape and architectural monuments. The “Russian Venice” art festival takes place there every spring. Following an old tradition, participants paint boats and oars used during the spring floods. The boats are then launched and take part in the “Poteshnaya Flotilla.” Free workshops, where visitors can paint themed pieces themselves, round out the festival. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the latest festival dates in advance.
If the festival is your main focus, take its current dates into account when planning.
