Yuzhsky District: Spinning Mill, Teza Painting, and Autumn Competitions
Accommodation in Yuzhsky District
Yuzhsky District offers several reasons to explore Yuzha: brick architecture, crafts, folk theater, and an autumn cranberry tradition. The district also has a multi-day hiking route. If you are looking for holiday accommodation, your interests can help shape your trip: should your stay focus mainly on crafts and architecture, theater, an autumn event, or a hike?
Spinning Mill and Crafts in Yuzha
The spinning mill building in Yuzha has a brick tower and, in shape, resembles a Catholic cathedral. The spinning mill grounds are closed; the brick buildings can be viewed from Lenin Square or from the opposite shore of Lake Vasal in Yuzha. Check before your visit whether access restrictions have changed. This will keep your sightseeing focused on the viewpoints mentioned here.
At the House of Crafts, visitors can make a souvenir themselves; check in advance whether this option is available during your visit. The artists at the house revived Yuzha, or Teza, painting based on old examples found during excavations by the Teza River. The architecture and crafts offer different ways to shape a stay in Yuzha: taking in the view of the spinning mill building or exploring a revived painting tradition.
Folk Theater and Architectural History
Narodny Dom is closely associated with the folk theater. The theater has a performance tradition stretching back more than 100 years, and every resident of the town can take part. The building also houses a small museum about the history and life of the folk theater. With a little luck, visitors may also see a rehearsal. Theater history and the chance to catch a rehearsal are therefore both part of the visit, although there is no fixed performance schedule.
Narodny Dom and the higher primary school in Yuzha were also built to designs by Gustav Gelrikh, a Moscow Art Nouveau architect. Architecture enthusiasts will find both a specific connection to an architect and the unusual spinning mill tower here. This gives a visit to Yuzha a different focus from a trip centered mainly on hiking or a seasonal event.
Hiking Route and Historic Ruins
A route description from 2016 presents the district hiking trail “Along the St. John’s Wort Path” as a 22-kilometer route designed to take two days, with an overnight stay on the shore of Lake Tonki. Before making plans, check whether the trail is still maintained and available. Its stated duration makes it a multi-day option, clearly distinct from a short visit to Yuzha’s sights.
Another historical trace lies near the former village of Preobrazhenskoye in Yuzhsky District: the ruins of an old manor house and a church. They are associated with several owners of the Yuzha factory and with the first masterpiece by St. Petersburg architect N. K. Rein. The ruins add a distinct site in the district to the town’s architectural history.
Autumn in Yuzha
Yuzha is known as the cranberry capital; berry-picking competitions take place there every autumn. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check that year’s program. This recurring autumn tradition offers a different reason to plan a trip than the architecture and crafts described as available year-round.
Kholuy and Other Artistic Traditions of Ivanovo Oblast
The wider destination of Ivanovo Oblast has other craft traditions, each associated with a particular place. In Kholuy, the house museum of artist V. D. Puzanov-Molev, one of the founders of Kholuy lacquer miniature painting, tells the story of his life and of the history of Kholuy and the local area. On display are simple tools and everyday objects from an ordinary village home. The State Museum in Kholuy has more than 5,000 exhibits and a regularly updated exhibition.
The State Museum of Kholuy Art holds workshops where visitors can paint a brooch, an Easter egg, or a cell phone holder; confirm current availability in advance. The tradition of old embroidery is also being revived at the Kholuy embroidery and sewing cooperative, where the work is done entirely by hand. Together with Yuzha, or Teza, painting, these traditions show the variety of crafts tied to specific places throughout Ivanovo Oblast.
