Ivanovo Oblast: Art, Crafts and History
Accommodation in Ivanovo Oblast
In Ivanovo Oblast, arts and crafts, museums and historic buildings offer many different discoveries. Palekh is known for icon painting and lacquer miniatures, Kholuy for embroidery as well, while Ivanovo showcases its textile history. Plyos combines museum visits with walks in the eco-park and a glimpse of its Volga town atmosphere. When choosing a holiday rental, consider which of these cultural experiences you would like to shape your stay.
Experience traditional crafts: Palekh, Kholuy and Ivanovo
Palekh is a good place to start if you are interested in icons and lacquer miniatures. The Palekh State Museum of Art includes the Icon Museum and the Museum of Lacquer Miniatures. At a workshop in the Museum of Lacquer Miniatures, visitors can paint a small papier-mâché object featuring the Firebird, a symbol of Palekh; painting a small papier-mâché box is also offered. Check which workshops are currently available before your visit. At the “Bakanova 46” gallery, visitors can also try making their own object in the authentic Palekh style.
The buildings also tell the story of local art: the “The Workshops” Art Centre is housed in a building that, in the 20th century, accommodated icon-painting workshops and the “Artel of Ancient Painting.” An icon collection created in Palekh includes works dating from the 14th to the 19th century. Its origins span from Novgorod to the Urals and from the Volga region to the Russian North. This offers a way to explore regional art from a broad chronological and geographical perspective, without reducing the collection to a single style or place.
In Kholuy, embroidery is another focus alongside lacquer miniatures. The Kholuy Embroidery and Sewing Artel is reviving the tradition of the old embroidery craft; all the pieces are made entirely by hand. The State Museum of Kholuy Art has more than 5,000 exhibits in a regularly updated exhibition. The house museum of Vasily Dmitrievich Puzanov-Molev, founder of Kholuy lacquer miniatures, displays simple tools and everyday objects from an ordinary village home. At the Kholuy Lacquer Miniature Art Factory, craftspeople work with cardboard, clay, stones and paints; visitors can take part in the work. Workshops at the State Museum also offer the chance to paint a brooch, an Easter egg or a mobile phone holder. Confirm that a workshop is currently available before your visit.
Ivanovo has a different focus: the Ivanovo Calico Museum displays rare calico fabrics from different periods, including propaganda textiles from the first half of the 20th century. Workshops offer the chance to print patterns on fabric; availability may vary, so it is advisable to enquire in advance. In Plyos, the “Arts and Crafts of Ivanovo Region” exhibition features weaving and embroidery, pieces from the Palekh and Kholuy lacquer miniature centres, and a jewellery collection. Several forms of traditional craftsmanship are presented side by side.
Architecture, town history and outdoor trails
The churches also offer a concrete glimpse into the architectural history of the oblast. The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in Palekh dates from the second half of the 18th century and was built in the Naryshkin Baroque style. In Teikovo, a church complex dating from the 18th century has been preserved. In Vichuga, the interior paintings in the Church of the Resurrection comprise more than 400 scenes. They were created by painters from the Safonov Palekh workshop in the Old Russian style. The Art Museum in Vichuga also displays examples of traditional crafts.
In Shuya, the free-standing bell tower of the Resurrection Cathedral is a striking landmark. From its base to the top of the spire, it measures 106 metres and is considered Europe’s tallest free-standing bell tower. In January, the “Russian Christmas” festival brings a festive atmosphere to the old town; check the event dates before travelling. Kineshma offers a different perspective on history: the history section of the Art and History Museum explores the lives of merchants, their houses and shops, and trade at the time. The art section displays paintings by Russian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Korovin and Andrey Schilder, as well as works by painters from Kineshma and temporary exhibitions.
Plyos is a small Volga town whose natural beauty and leisurely pace have long attracted artists. One of the town’s highest points is named Gora Levitan, or Levitan Hill, after the artist Levitan. The eco-park has paths for walking and Nordic walking. This combination of town character, artistic connections and outdoor activity offers a different emphasis from the craft collections in Palekh, Kholuy and Ivanovo.
