Nature and landscape

The Bazoș Arboretum comprises 776 taxa of woody plants in collections from North America and Asia. With 19 species, it has Romania’s largest collection of oaks. The first landscaping work there was carried out from 1909 to 1914 on the initiative of the then owner, Count Ludovic Ambrosie.

The Bazoș Arboretum lies at the transition between the floodplains of the Bega and Timiș rivers, in a flat alluvial plain. In the immediate vicinity of Comuna Bucovăţ lies Moşniţa, a hill-type landscape feature. In the wider regional area are the Fântâna lui Goga spring and the Dealul Flămând and Piatra Roşie landscape features, both of the hill type.

Culture and history

In 1790, the church in Bucovăț purchased liturgical books printed in Blaj (Ardeal). The Casa Memorială a Comunei Bucovăț preserves original furniture, tools and clothing. It shows visitors what an ordinary household in the lowland Banat looked like.

The Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe church is located in the immediate vicinity of Comuna Bucovăţ. Construction work on the present-day Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe church in Bucovăț began on 20 July 1935 and was completed at Christmas of the same year. The current towers were added by Father Ioan Drăgan between 1989 and 1993.

The Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului church is also located in the immediate vicinity of Comuna Bucovăţ. The historic Casa Contelui Mercy Timişoara site is located in the area around Comuna Bucovăţ.

Everyday life and customs

Access to the Bazoș Arboretum is provided by Remetea Mare railway station, 6 kilometers away, as well as by National Road 6 and the Remetea Mare–Bucovăț–Bazoșu Nou county road.
