Fortress and Danube floodplain

The ruins of Cetatea Turnu lie in the Danube floodplain south of Turnu Măgurele. They are four kilometres from the town, while the confluence of the Olt and Danube is one kilometre away. The “Turnu” archaeological site is a medieval and early modern fortress dating from the 14th to the 19th century. During the reign of Mircea cel Bătrân, Cetatea Turnu played an important role in Wallachia’s defence system.

The history of the place therefore brings together several periods: the fortress is associated with both the Middle Ages and the early modern period, while its military importance falls within the reign of Mircea cel Bătrân. Its location in the Danube floodplain provides the geographical setting for this historic site; the Olt and Danube are named rivers that form part of its geographical context.

Culture and historic sites

The Catedrala Sfântul Haralambie is listed as a Class A historic monument. The Muzeul municipal is located in the town centre, in the immediate vicinity of the Catedrala Sfântul Haralambie.

The Prefect’s House is located at Calea Dunării 1. It is a local historic monument dating from 1890 and was designed in the French Eclectic style. The water tower of Turnu Măgurele was built in 1915 and served the town’s water supply.

The historic townscape therefore encompasses various building purposes and design forms: the Catedrala Sfântul Haralambie is listed as a monument, the Muzeul municipal is located in the centre, and the Prefect’s House has a documented address, year of construction and style. The water tower, through its former function, refers to the town’s water supply.

The Dorobantul Monument commemorates the local hero Tudorică Nicolae, who fell in the War of Independence. Its central element is a bronze full-length sculpture of a soldier in field uniform. Two cannons captured at Plevna flank the monument.

The memorial site thus combines the remembrance of a local figure with a sculptural representation and the two cannons. Tudorică Nicolae, the soldier in field uniform and Plevna are named as distinct elements of the documented history of the monument.

Nature and cycling

The ROSCI0044 Corabia Turnu-Măgurele Natura 2000 site lies in the wider Corabia–Turnu Măgurele area. Cycling opportunities are available in the areas near the Olt and Sâi.

The protected area is assigned to the wider Corabia–Turnu Măgurele region, while the mentioned cycling opportunities are explicitly tied to the areas near the Olt and Sâi. Thus, both the wider regional surroundings and specific river areas with their own geographical references are named.

Connections via the Danube and by land

A ferry crossing on the Danube connects Turnu Măgurele with Nikopol. A bus route connects Bucharest, Turnu Măgurele and Corabia. Travel access is therefore documented by a connection across the Danube and a named bus route involving three places.

The ferry connection runs across the Danube between Turnu Măgurele and Nikopol. The bus route, on the other hand, lists a sequence via Bucharest, Turnu Măgurele and Corabia. Both transport connections include Turnu Măgurele as a named place.

You can find more places at: Mariţa, Fântânele, Alexandria, Suhaia, Bogdana, Baciu, Zimnicea and Videle.
