Bogdana: Tumuli, Churches and Landscape in Teleorman County

Culture and History

The high terrace east of the Urlui stream provides the spatial setting for two named tumuli in Bogdana. The tumulus Tumulul de la Bogdana – TUM-BOG 051, also called Măgura lui Cazacu, is located there in Bogdana. It is classified as a burial find, has an approximate diameter of 60 metres and reaches a maximum height of 2 metres. The tumulus Tumulul de la Bogdana – TUM-BOG 046, also called Măgura lui Cocoşilă, is likewise located on the high terrace east of the Urlui stream. Fragments of fired clay and an atypical pottery fragment were found at the TUM-BOG 046 site; the pottery fragment is probably prehistoric. Thus, archaeological history and landscape appear in Bogdana in two specific, differently named earth formations: one tumulus is defined by its classification and measurements, while the other is defined by the materials found there.

The Liviu Rebreanu Memorial Museum in Bogdana has no permanent exhibition. Bogdana is also home to Biserica-Bogdana, an Orthodox church in Bogdana, Teleorman County. The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Bogdana dates from 1883. Historical, religious and museum-related references therefore appear in the locality in various specific forms: as a memorial museum, an Orthodox church and a church dating from 1883.

Surroundings

The Biserica Ortodoxă Tudor Vladimirescu church is located in the vicinity of Bogdana. In the wider regional surroundings of Bogdana is the Muzeul Municipal de Artă Turnu Măgurele museum. Also in the wider regional surroundings are the Biserica Sfânta Cuvioasa Paraschiva church and the Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe church. The cultural sites are therefore distributed across two clearly distinct spatial levels: the surroundings and the wider regional surroundings of Bogdana. In addition to the locality itself, named churches and a museum outside Bogdana are thus part of this cultural setting.

Landscape

The landscape sites are also distributed across these spatial settings. The Movila Furculeşti hill is located in the vicinity of Bogdana. The Dealul Geroasa hill and the Măgura Izlazului hill are also located there. The landscape sites therefore follow a recognisable pattern: several named hills lie in the vicinity of Bogdana. In the wider regional surroundings of Bogdana is the Ostrovul Cioroiu island. Thus, among the landscape features, hills in the vicinity and an island in the wider regional surroundings stand side by side. Opening hours determine the time frame for a museum or church visit and should be checked for currency before travelling. For excursions to hills and islands, route conditions and transport times are part of the preparations; these details should also be checked before the trip. For religious buildings, the respective visiting hours may also be relevant to daily planning, while landscape destinations require travellers to make their own preparations based on current route conditions.
