Alexandria: Museum, Cathedral and Routes to the Vedea

The Muzeul Județean Teleorman preserves more than 50,000 objects grouped into 70 collections. These collections include archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, palaeontology, history and art. The museum’s holdings therefore bring together archaeological and ethnographic subjects alongside numismatic, palaeontological, historical and artistic themes.

The museum’s holdings thus comprise both a large number of objects and an arrangement into 70 collections. More than 50,000 objects are not assigned to a single collection but are distributed across 70 collections. The six areas range from archaeology and ethnography through numismatics and palaeontology to history and art. In this way, the classification encompasses different fields within the same museum.

The Catedrala Episcopală Sf. Alexandru was built between 1869 and 1898. The cathedral features a wall painting created by Ștefan Luchian and N. Artachino. The Catedrala Episcopală Sf. Alexandru also houses a sarcophagus containing the mortal remains of Al. Dimitrie Ghica. Al. Dimitrie Ghica was the founder of the city.

The cathedral therefore brings together several clearly identified historical and artistic details. The construction period extends from 1869 to 1898. In addition, there is the wall painting by the two named artists. The sarcophagus of Al. Dimitrie Ghica is also kept inside; he is likewise connected with the founding history of Alexandria.
