Slimnic is known in German as “Stolzenburg”; the name means “proud castle”.

Culture and architecture

The Cetatea țărănească de la Slimnic stands on a hill above Slimnic; its tall red-brick ruins are visible from far away. The Cetatea țărănească de la Slimnic was built in several construction phases along the road between Sibiu and Mediaș.

The oldest part of Slimnic Fortress is a three-storey bell tower. Its ground floor contains a Gothic chapel. Construction began at the Cetatea țărănească de la Slimnic on a Gothic church that was most probably never completed. The south wall of the nave and the pointed-arch arcades leading to the side aisle can still be seen. The Cetatea țărănească de la Slimnic also contains a small Gothic chapel; it is the only one there that can still be admired.

The fortress’s construction history remains legible in several details: The bell tower belongs to its oldest part, while the south wall of the nave and the pointed-arch arcades leading to the side aisle have survived from the church whose construction was begun. Different stages of construction therefore stand side by side there, complemented by the Gothic chapels within the complex.

The Protestant church, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, was built in the first half of the 15th century. The Orthodox church, dedicated to the Holy Archangels, was built of stone and brick in 1831. The Greek Catholic church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was built between 1904 and 1910 on the site of an older stone church.

The churches also differ significantly in denomination, dedication and construction period: The Church of Saint Bartholomew belongs to the Protestant tradition of the 15th century, the Church of the Holy Archangels was built of stone and brick in 1831, and the Church of the Holy Trinity followed between 1904 and 1910 on the site of an older stone church.
