Miercurea Sibiului: Historic Town Center and Markets

The rural historic ensemble “Centrul istoric” of Miercurea Sibiului dates from the 18th–19th centuries. Its boundaries make the historic town center visible as a clearly designated area within the settlement.

It includes the central area with the square of the Evangelical church, Piața Republicii. This area is bounded by house numbers 190–239, 541–588, 634–637, 660–673, and 766–800.

Culture and History

The Biserica Evanghelică Fortificată din Miercurea Sibiului was built around 1260. It was constructed in the Romanesque style. In 1496, the side aisles of the Biserica Evanghelică Fortificată in Miercurea Sibiului were raised, giving it the appearance of a hall church. Bustul lui Cornel Medrea, a 20th-century monument, stands in the central square of Miercurea Sibiului. Thus, the church’s Romanesque construction period and the later raising of the side aisles stand alongside each other as two dated elements of its building history.

Both site names therefore belong to the archaeological heritage of Miercurea Sibiului, with Luncă (Pustia) characterized by its eastern location and the cultural layers mentioned.

In Miercurea Băi, south of Miercurea Sibiului, at the Barcu stream opposite the baths and 100 m south of the Sibiu–Sebeș national road, a Roman mansio from the 2nd–3rd century AD is recorded. Markets and Events

From April to October, a monthly local producers’ market takes place in the center of Miercurea Sibiului. Markets take place in Miercurea Sibiului on Saturdays.
