Culture

The Muzeul de Istorie Casa Altemberger was built at the end of the 15th century and is Romania’s largest Gothic civic ensemble. Its exhibitions provide an overview of the development of human communities in southern Transylvania, focusing on the city of Sibiu and its surroundings. The period covered ranges from the earliest human traces documented there, dating from the Palaeolithic, to the modern era.

The European Art Gallery of the Muzeul Brukenthal is based on Baron Samuel von Brukenthal’s European painting collection and comprises around 1,200 works from the major European schools of painting dating from the 15th to the 18th century.

The permanent exhibition of the Muzeul Bisericii Evanghelice provides an overview of the history of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession, that is, the Lutheran Church, in Romania, as well as the communal and religious life of the Transylvanian Saxons. The museum displays sacred artworks and cultural heritage objects from seven centuries, including altars, communion vessels, sculptures, textiles and printed works.

History

The Podul Minciunilor became the first cast-iron bridge in what is now Romania in 1859. In 2007, the Asociaţia pentru întreţinerea Casei Calfelor was founded in Sibiu. The Casa Calfelor is the first journeymen’s house outside Germany, France and Switzerland.

Leisure

The Lacul lui Binder leisure complex has wakeboarding facilities and beaches. The site also includes a floating playground, beach volleyball courts and jetties.

The themed Traseul Emil Cioran cycling loop connects Sibiu with Rășinari and runs as a 25-kilometre circular route through Sub-Arini Park, Dumbrava Forest, Rășinari and Poplaca.

Gușterița has six hiking and cycling routes. Each route has its own story and offers a different experience.

In the vicinity of Sibiu, the ASTRA Museum offers horse-drawn carriage rides as a leisure activity for visitors.

Getting around

Sibiu International Airport is directly connected to the public transport network of the city of Sibiu. Tursib bus services run directly to key areas of Sibiu.

The Turnul Sfatului is currently closed to visitors due to renovation work. The work is estimated to be completed by the end of 2027.

The Piața volantă Transilvania in Sibiu is a market for small producers from the Sibiu region and offers cheese, baked goods, meat products, organically grown fruit and vegetables, organic honey, jams and syrups. The selection combines animal products, plant-based produce and preserved specialities.
