The Brukenthal Summer Residence in Avrig was built in the late Viennese Baroque style. Its park was created based on the model of Baroque Viennese gardens and combines this design with elements of an English garden. Avenues, a Baroque fountain, as well as Mediterranean trees and shrubs characterize the grounds. The park also offers the opportunity to go for a walk at any time. This brings architectural history, garden art and a tangible outdoor space together directly. The design thus extends from the residence building into the outdoor spaces.

Landscape and Trails

Valea Avrigului is a tourist area that stretches along and is traversed by the Avrig River. The transport situation is also part of the geographical context: Avrig is located on the DN1–E68, which connects Sibiu with Făgăraș, Brașov and Bucharest. Current trail and route conditions should be checked before travelling for walks and mountain tours.

Mountain Trails

A mountain route starting in Avrig leads via Izvorul Florii, Suru, Lake Avrig, Negoiu and Bâlea. Another route also begins in Avrig and connects the town with Poiana Neamțului, Cabana Bârcaciu, Lake Avrig and Suru. Both routes include Lake Avrig and Suru, but differ in the other named mountain destinations and their order. Current route conditions should be checked before travelling for hikes.

There is no fixed visiting schedule for the fortified church of Avrig. Visitors should contact the administrator in good time so that the church can be opened.

Culture and Crafts

The Muzeul Avrig includes an exhibition about the Romanian Enlightenment figure Gheorghe Lazăr, the founder of the education system in the Romanian language. The memorial house “Casa memorială Gheorghe Lazăr” in Avrig contains exhibits that belonged to the Transylvanian Enlightenment figure.

The Glass Museum in Palatul Brukenthal contains more than 1,100 exhibits. They were produced in previous years by the glass factory in Avrig. The museum offers visitors insights into the art of glassblowing and the history of this glass factory. The collection connects the glass objects produced with the craft process of glassblowing and the history of the production site. Thus, alongside the gardens and mountain trails, local craftsmanship—with its products and production history—is also a central focus.

History and Customs

The frescoes in the Orthodox church of Avrig were created from 1762 onwards by the masters Ionașcu and Pană. The fortified church was reinforced with defensive walls in the 15th century and converted into a hall church. Inside, it preserves a Romanesque portal, Gothic sculptures and Baroque elements. Its architectural history and furnishings span from the medieval fortifications to later layers of art history.

Meteleaua is considered one of the oldest customs still maintained in Avrig. Current dates should be checked before travelling for customs and traditional events.
