Discover Gura Râului on the Cibin

Gura Râului is located in the Cindrel Nature Park area and brings together landscape, waterways and traditional culture within a compact thematic setting. Every year, the “Bujorul de Munte” festival takes place below the dam.

Nature and Water

Cindrel Nature Park is located within the area of Gura Râului commune. The settlement extends along the banks of the Cibin River. A reservoir regulated by a dam is located on the Cibin within the commune. The imposing Gura Râului dam lies in a landscape shaped by mountain ridges. Visitors are invited to stop on the dam and take in the surrounding landscape. Below the dam, the “Bujorul de Munte” festival takes place every year and forms a distinct cultural event in the local annual calendar.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

The Coada lacului Gura Râului–Şaua Cânaia–Valea Sadului hiking route is marked with a blue triangle on a white background. The end of the Gura Râului reservoir can be reached by car. Alternatively, you can travel to Gura Râului by coach; from the commune, an approximately two-hour walk then leads to the reservoir.

For mountain bikers, the Gura Râului–Râul Mic–Sub Duși–Crinț–Sibiel route is just under 50 km long and has an elevation gain of around 1,000 m. It starts at the “Trecătoarea Lupilor” trail at the edge of Gura Râului in the direction of the reservoir. From there, the route follows the left bank of the reservoir. At its end, it continues along the path in the riverbed of the Râul Mic. In the direction of “Sub Duși”, the route climbs to 1,230 m.

Church and Traditions

The “Sf. Mihail şi Gavril” Church in Gura Râului was built in 1887. Its construction combines Byzantine and Baroque stylistic elements, while the tower features Gothic elements. If you would like to visit the church, you should contact the priest. On Sundays and public holidays, residents of Gura Râului attend the church wearing traditional costumes. They follow a traditional seating arrangement.
