Landscape

The landscape around Sâncraiu de Mureş includes several named elevations and bodies of water. The Dealul Sântana hill is located in the surrounding area, as is the Dealul Popaia hill. In the wider regional surroundings are the Dealul Căpăcelului hill and the Fântâna Babii spring. The different names refer to individual landscape features, each with its own geographical location.

A former millrace of the Mureş reaches the southern edge of Sâncraiu de Mureş and is still clearly recognisable in the terrain today. Its historical status is preserved in its designation as a former millrace. The ROSCI0367 Râul Mureș între Morești și Ogra protected area lies within the municipality and complements this description of the landscape with a protected area.

Culture and History

The Reformed Church in Sâncraiu de Mureş is a historic monument. Its tower dates from the 13th century, while the church building dates from 1901. The Roman Catholic Church in Sâncraiu de Mureş is also a historic monument, with its construction history extending from the 14th to the 18th century. The two churches therefore reflect different periods: the tower of the Reformed Church is significantly older than its church building, while the Catholic Church spans several centuries.

The Casa Amintirilor Museum is located in the cultural centre of the Sâncraiu de Mureş municipality. Another type of museum is the Oldtimer Tractor Museum in Sâncraiu de Mureş, which is designed as an open-air museum. Before visiting, the current opening hours of museums can be checked; they are part of the practical planning for such a visit.

Archaeology

The medieval settlement of Sâncraiu de Mureş at the “Biserică” find site dates from the 12th to the 13th century. The Dealul Păgânilor archaeological area comprises a fortified settlement from the Bronze Age. The two sites belong to different periods and each preserve their own historical context.

Traces of a Roman road have been identified in the area of Sâncraiu de Mureş on the right bank of the Mureş. The road ran from Morești via Sâncraiu de Mureş to Brâncovenești. Lithic material and building material, the toponymy and some documentary evidence make it possible to identify the site with the Pauline monastery of Sâncraiu de Mureş. The archaeological references thus extend from the Bronze Age through the Roman road to the medieval settlement and the Pauline monastery.

Other Cultural Sites

The wider regional surroundings of Sâncraiu de Mureş include the Biserica Reformată Şincai church, the Biserica Romano-Catolică Şincai church, the Biserica Ortodoxă Şincai Orthodox church and the Biserica Negrenii de Câmpie church.
