Weissenkirch: Petőfi history and nature near Albești
Weissenkirch: In Albești, the Petőfi Festival commemorates the 1849 battle and the death of the poet Petőfi Sándor every summer on the last Sunday in July.
Culture and history
One of the last battles of the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848–1849 took place in Albești.
The Petőfi Memorial Complex was inaugurated on 26 July following the renovation of the old museum, the construction of a new exhibition room and the establishment of a permanent exhibition.
The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of the place, the Revolution of 1848–1849, the Sighișoara–Albești battle and the disappearance of the poet Petőfi Sándor.
The Petőfi Memorial Museum comprises three rooms with contemporary documents and objects relating to the life of Petőfi Sándor, as well as a miniature model of the battlefield in Albești.
The Albești-Cetățea archaeological site is located 3 km south of Albești, on a hill in the Șarpatoc Valley.
The historical heritage includes various forms of commemoration: the Petőfi Memorial Park, the Petőfi Memorial House, the exhibition room, the museum and the statues each form separate elements of the culture of remembrance in Albești. In the museum, biographical documents and objects are displayed alongside the miniature model of the battlefield.
The Petőfi Memorial Site was expanded with statues of Sándor Petőfi and József Bem.
The Petőfi Memorial Park was established by Countess Lujza Haller together with the Petőfi Memorial House.
On the former Haller family estate, next to a presumed mass grave, stands a ten-metre-high Turul monument erected in 1899.
Landscape and location
The municipality of Albești lies in the central section of the Târnava Mare river basin.
The southern part of the municipality lies in Podișul Hârtibaciului.
The ROSCI0227 Sighișoara–Târnava Mare protected area covers 35% of the administrative territory of the municipality of Albești.
The ROSPA0028 Dealurile Târnavelor–Valea Nirajului protected area covers 4% of the administrative territory of the municipality of Albești.
The ROSPA0099 Podișul Hârtibaciului protected area covers 34% of the administrative territory of the municipality of Albești.
The three protected areas have different names and together cover large, separately designated portions of the administrative territory. Their names refer to the landscapes of Sighișoara–Târnava Mare, Dealurile Târnavelor–Valea Nirajului and Podișul Hârtibaciului.
The municipality of Albești is crossed from west to east by the DN 13–E60 road.
Hiking trails
The themed trail “Discover the municipality of Albești – Colinele Transilvaniei” was approved as part of the visitor infrastructure of the Colinele Transilvaniei destination.
In Mureș County, the trail covers six administrative units: Vânători, Saschiz, Albești, Sighișoara, Apold and Daneș.
The Albești Local Council approved the marking of hiking trails in the municipality’s area as part of the Colinele Transilvaniei destination.
The trail therefore includes both Albești and five other administrative units in Mureș County. The approved marking concerns the area of the municipality of Albești and is associated with the Colinele Transilvaniei destination.
