Nature and Trails

Burgfeld: The Terra Siculorum section of the Via Transilvanica begins in Câmpu Cetăţii and crosses the Sovata–Praid depression. The landscape comprises gentle hills, flowering meadows, dense forests and pastures. These different landscape elements accompany the course of the section and shape the scenery between the open areas and the wooded sections.

From Câmpu Cetăţii, hikes through the surrounding forests can lead to Lacul cu Arini, Vityál Fortress and Piatra Likaskő. The list of mountain hiking trails also includes the Câmpu Cetăţii – Dealul Vardomb – Câmpu Cetăţii route. In addition to the destinations mentioned, this means that the described trail network also includes a route returning to its starting point.

Câmpu Cetăţii is the venue for the Parada Baloanelor cu Aer Cald, an internationally recognised hot-air balloon event. The trout farm in Câmpu Cetăţii was founded around the 1930s; Câmpu Cetăţii has also long been known for its fresh trout dishes. The event, fish farm and cuisine thus represent different aspects of the village.

Traces of History

On a hilltop to the north, at the confluence of the Nirajul Mare and Nirajul Mic, lies the “Aşezarea Latene de la Câmpu Cetăţii - Cetate”. The Geto-Dacian settlement belongs to the La Tène period and dates from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. Its surrounding wall forms an oval ring located about 15 metres below the summit. The site may have comprised two settlement phases: a Dacian and an early medieval one.

South of Câmpu Cetăţii, in the forest on the summit of Dealul Săcădat between the Niraj Valley and the Săcădat Valley, lies the “Turnul de epocă romană de la Câmpu Cetăţii - Cetatea Săcădat”. The tower formed part of the eastern line of the Roman limes in Dacia. The fortification dates from the Roman era, specifically the 2nd to 3rd century AD. Its ground plan is approximately rectangular; the site includes a 27.5 × 26.5-metre earthen rampart with a rounded corner and V-shaped defensive ditches.

Models and Railway

The Mini Niraj Visitor Centre displays a model depicting the entire Niraj Valley. The Mini Nyárád model complex comprises 81 buildings, while its model railway has seven trains. In addition, the railway section between Sovata and Câmpu Cetăţii reflects the area’s more recent history of use: it was restored in 2011 and is used for tourism. During the summer season, tourists can travel 14 kilometres to Câmpu Cetăţii on the Mocănița. Thus, the Mini-Nyárád complex combines a representation of the valley with the operation of its own model railway, while the Mocănița uses the historic railway section between Sovata and Câmpu Cetăţii.
