Topliţa – Nature, Cultural Heritage and Holiday Apartments

Geography

Topliţa lies on the western slope of the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains between the Cerna Valley and the Mureş Valley. The commune belongs to Ținutul Pădurenilor, an ethnofolkloristic and geographical region where traditions and folk art are preserved.

The commune’s relief is characterised by stepped landforms divided into long ridges reaching elevations of around 1,300 metres. Geologically, Topliţa consists mainly of metamorphic crystalline rocks. The commune features high ridges and steep slopes. Together with its location between two valleys, these geological and topographical characteristics determine the commune’s landscape classification.

Nature

The “2.530 Cheile Cernei” area is a national nature reserve of the mixed type. Cheile Cernei covers approximately 3% of the area of Topliţa commune. The protection of the Asperulo-Fagetum forest habitat, coded 9130, is designated for this area.

The Cheile Cernei protection complex covers 512.9 ha. 35.2% of its area lies within Topliţa commune. Trout and chub occur in the running waters of the Topliţa–Hăşdău area. Thus, the description of nature encompasses both the protected forest areas and the waterways and their named fish populations.

Culture and History

In 1781, the first modern blast furnace in the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains area was built in Topliţa, in the Cerna Valley. The blast furnace in Topliţa village began operating on 1 July 1781 and remained in operation until 1837. These details link the site in the Cerna Valley to a precisely dated beginning and the subsequent operating period.

The ruins of Topliţa’s blast furnace in Zona Morii are a historic monument dating from 1781. The monument’s LMI code is HD-II-m-A-03468.

Traces discovered on Măgura Topliţa indicate historical gold mining near the Topliţa stream. In the vicinity of Topliţa, in the lower part of Vălari village, stands the wooden church Biserica de lemn Sf. Nicolae, dendrochronologically dated to 1677.

The wooden church of Vălari is a rare surviving example of sacred wooden architecture. Festivalul Pădurenilor is one of the local events of Topliţa commune. Thus, alongside the traces of gold mining and the industrial monument, the commune’s cultural setting also includes a dated wooden structure and a local event.

Excursions

At the entrance to the commune, the Lacul Cinciș recreational area lies in the vicinity of Topliţa. A tourist day route through Ținutul Pădurenilor descends the Cerna Valley to Topliţa and includes the ruins of Topliţa’s blast furnace. The route therefore names both the course through the Cerna Valley and the ruins as part of the day’s destination.
