Bălan among the Eastern Carpathians, Churches and Mining History
Bălan lies at the foot of Hășmașul Mare in the Eastern Carpathians. Its location combines prominent mountain surroundings with a history shaped by copper mining. Paragliding is also possible in Bălan; the terrain is accessible to both beginners and experienced pilots.
Nature and Mountains
The Mesteacănul reservoir on the Olt is located near Bălan in a scenic area. The regional landscape also includes an 800-hectare area that has been protected as a nature reserve since 1995. On the Olt, the reservoir stands out as an individual landscape feature, while the reserve encompasses a larger protected area.
The area around Bălan includes Muntele Făgetul Rotund, the Fagul Ascuţit peak, Vârful Stejărişului and the Răchitiş peak. These four named mountains and peaks add further prominent landmarks to the view of Hășmașul Mare. Churches and Mining History
The Roman Catholic Church of Bălan is a Gothic building and is designated as a historic monument. The present Roman Catholic church was begun in 1864 and consecrated in 1869. Thus, the building brings together Gothic design, its designation as a historic monument and its origin in the 19th century.
The area around Bălan also includes Biserica Ortodoxă Sândominic, Biserica Catolică Sândominic, Biserica Ortodoxă Ciuntită and Biserica Tomeşti. Bălan’s mining heritage is connected with the discovery and extraction of its copper deposit. The systematic exploitation of Bălan’s copper deposit and the excavation of deep adits began in 1803. This reputation therefore extended beyond Bălan to three historic regions in which the copper was known.
Festivals and Paragliding
Annual festivals, including Zilele Orașului Bălan, bring locals and visitors together and highlight local handicrafts and traditional cuisine. The BOTORKA cultural association organizes an International Youth Folk Dance Festival in Bălan every year. Zilele Orașului focuses on local crafts and cuisine; BOTORKA places its own emphasis on international folk dance and young people.
