Archaeology and Viticulture

The “Valea Fântânilor” archaeological site is located on the grounds of the viticulture station. It includes an early medieval settlement dating from the 8th to the 9th century. This brings together, in one place, the current use of the site and the traces of a much older settlement.

The “La Cruţescu” archaeological site lies on a neighboring terrace north of the former Lake Greaca. The former lake is a historical reference point for the location. The site includes an Iron Age settlement. Another archaeological site is “La Slom”, with settlement remains from the Early and Middle Hallstatt periods.

Viticulture is also represented by Domeniul Greaca. The estate covers 12 hectares and is located very close to the entrance to Greaca. The listed Conacul Gorski dates from 1900 to 1916 and is now used as a viticulture station. Viticulture is therefore associated with both a historic building and a large estate bearing the place name Greaca.

Churches and History

Another historic focal point is the “Sfinții 40 de Mucenici” church in Greaca. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is under the protection of the Holy 40 Martyrs of Sebaste. After restoration work, the church’s painted decoration was reconsecrated on the day of its patronal feast. Its construction period, patronage and the reconsecration of its painted decoration are therefore among the documented characteristics of this place of worship.

Several churches are also located in the surrounding area of Greaca. These include the Parohia Căscioarele church and the Parohia Crivăţ church. The Biserica Puieni church and the Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului church are also located in the same area.

Places in the Surrounding Area

The surroundings of Greaca include Dealul Gheilor hill, Golyam Brashlen island and the La Fântânele spring. These three named places represent different landscape features: a hill, an island and a spring. Ostrovul Lungu island, by contrast, lies in the wider regional surroundings of Greaca. Its geographical classification therefore extends beyond the immediate surroundings of the town.

The spatial descriptions also differ: La Cruţescu lies north of the former lake on a neighboring terrace, while Ostrovul Lungu lies in the wider regional surroundings of Greaca.
