Discover Târgu Secuiesc

In the historic centre of Târgu Secuiesc lies an oval former market square. Radiating from it are 73 so-called “udvarterek”, or cul-de-sacs. The inner courtyards are narrow alleys between 2 and 4 metres wide. They range from 25 to 180 metres in length. Their radial arrangement and varying dimensions shape the distinctive spatial structure of this historic centre.

Culture

The Guild Museum of Târgu Secuiesc displays tools, products and workshop equipment from traditional trades. Potters, shoemakers, tanners, furriers and blacksmiths are represented. Locksmiths, hatters, tailors and carpenters are also among the occupations documented in the museum. A separate room is dedicated to documents from the Revolution of 1848–1849.

The Guild Museum also preserves almost 200 dolls. Most wear Hungarian folk costumes. Nearly all regions of Transylvania are represented in this collection, which spans approximately a century. In addition to craft tools and products, the museum therefore also houses an extensive collection of textile and regional representations.

The Pharmacy Museum is located on the upper floor of the so-called Finta House, Courtyard 12, No. 1. Its collection includes furnishings and equipment from pharmacies 24 and 52 in Târgu Secuiesc. These objects date from the period after 1949. The collection was supplemented by the collection of Dr Boga Olivér. The Pharmacy Museum is one of four pharmacy museums in Transylvania.

History

The Reformed Calvinist Church of Târgu Secuiesc was built between 1770 and 1782 in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It stands on the foundations of a wooden chapel dating from the early 17th century. The present organ dates from 1861. It was made by organ builder Kolonics István.

The Baroque Catholic Church of Târgu Secuiesc was begun in 1701. In 1796, it was consecrated in honour of the Holy Trinity. The two churches thus bring together different construction periods and ecclesiastical historical connections within the city.

The Vigadó Cultural Centre was built in 1902–1904 on the north-western side of the historic centre of Târgu Secuiesc. It has a theatre hall with 400 seats and a conference hall with 150 seats.

In connection with the Turóczi-Mózes Memorial House, 64 of Gábor Áron’s 70 cannons were cast here between January and June 1849. Memorial ceremonies marking the anniversaries of the birth and death of the craftsman Turóczi Mózes are held every year at his statue.

Local life

On the second Saturday of each month, Târgu Secuiesc hosts a market for traditional Szekler products. This fixed date places the market regularly within the city’s monthly calendar.

An MTB route connects Târgu Secuiesc with Lake Saint Anne. This connection complements the town’s historical and cultural highlights with a clearly defined mountain biking route.
