Culture

Sfântu Gheorghe is home to the building complex of the Muzeul Național Secuiesc. It was built between 1911 and 1913. The architect Károly Kós is associated with this building.

The Colecția Publică Cinegetică a Ținutului Secuiesc is housed in Casa Bene. Casa Bene is a historic architectural monument in the city of Sfântu Gheorghe.

The Prima Școală Românească in Sfântu Gheorghe has been documented since 1799. The Prima Școală Românească museum site comprises four rooms. These include a classroom and an anteroom. A library and the teacher’s living quarters are also part of it.

Together, these cultural sites show different aspects of the city’s history: The building complex is associated with a specific construction period and a named architect, while Casa Bene houses a collection. The Prima Școală Românească connects the site documented since 1799 with a clearly defined museum site and its four different rooms.

Historic Sites

Casa cu Arcade was built between 1818 and 1822. It was constructed in the classical style as the headquarters of the Szekler Hussar Regiment’s command. From 1958 to 2002, the building housed the State Archives of Covasna County.

Casa cu Arcade thus reflects two uses of the building separated in time. Its construction as the headquarters of the Szekler Hussar Regiment’s command was followed by its use by the State Archives of Covasna County, which lasted from 1958 to 2002.

Park and Events

The centrally located Elisabeta Park has shaded paths. The park also contains a small water-lily pond. Other facilities include a maze and a playground.

The park therefore combines paths, a body of water and two other designed areas. The water-lily pond, maze and playground complement the shaded paths with different elements within the central park.

The Zilele Sfântu Gheorghe include a handicraft market. More than 200 exhibitors take part in this market. The Galopiada Secuiască is held on Pivniţele Mari Hill. There, the event revives equestrian traditions.

The events therefore comprise both a market with more than 200 exhibitors and an event on Pivniţele Mari Hill. The handicraft market is part of the Zilele Sfântu Gheorghe, while the Galopiada Secuiască establishes the connection to equestrian traditions.

Lake and Green Area

Lacul din zona Gării is an artificial lake. Visitors can take a walk in the green area by the lake. Running is also possible there.

The green area by the artificial lake thus complements the paths in Elisabeta Park with another place for outdoor exercise. Walks and running are explicitly mentioned for the lake; its location is indicated by the name zona Gării, meaning the station area.

Getting There

The Muzeul Național al Carpaților Răsăriteni can be reached by Multitrans public transport on routes L1 and L2.

The museum can also be reached via the Brașov–Sfîntu Gheorghe–Miercurea Ciuc railway line and the CFR Sf. Gheorghe station.
