Ozun: Churches, Crafts and Medieval Cultural Landscape

The cultural landscape of Ozun faithfully preserves the medieval landscape character of Europe. At the center of the village stands the church, surrounded by houses. Beyond these are vegetable gardens, orchards, arable fields, hay meadows, and pastures, while the outer ring is formed by the forest. The spatial arrangement thus leads from the built-up center through agriculturally shaped areas to the edge of the forest.

Culture and History

Several types of churches shape Ozun’s architectural history. The Reformed Church of Ozun has an egg-shaped floor plan. Its bell tower has an onion-shaped dome and was built in 1842–1844. The Reformed Church is listed as a historic monument of the village. The Roman Catholic Church of Ozun was built in 1909–1911. The Orthodox Church of Ozun was built in 1883 on the site of a wooden church. Ozun’s churchscape thus includes a Reformed church with an egg-shaped floor plan, a Roman Catholic church dating from 1909–1911, and an Orthodox church built in 1883 on the site of a wooden church. The bell tower of the Reformed Church has an onion-shaped dome and was built in 1842–1844.

The Pünkösti manor house is also considered an art monument. Traditional houses in Ozun are characterized by large barns and wooden roofs. The local crafts passed down from generation to generation in Ozun include woodworking for tubs, barrels, and traditionally painted furniture. Bone working and pottery are also part of this craft heritage. The manor house, house forms, and crafts thus constitute distinct elements of the cultural character of the locality.

The Black Church is located in the wider regional surroundings of Ozun. St. Nicholas Church in Braşov is also located in this wider regional area. Both destinations expand the cultural space around the locality with additional church buildings.

Nature

A significant part of the ROSCI0111 “Mestecănișul de la Reci – Bălțile de la Ozun și Sântionlunca” Natura 2000 site lies within the territory of the municipality of Ozun. The Natura 2000 site is of particular scientific importance because of its hygrophilous species, which are rare in Romania. Ozun’s natural heritage is therefore connected with an area whose significance is based on rare moisture-loving species in Romania.

The Lisnau peak lies in the immediate vicinity of Ozun. The Pietros peak is located near Ozun. The Cusurusului peak is also located near Ozun. The Saciova peak is likewise located near Ozun.

Events

The programs traditionally held as part of Zilele Comunei Ozun include sports, cultural, and gastronomic activities. Zilele Comunei Ozun usually takes place every year. Sports, culture, and gastronomy are brought together at this recurring event.
