Discover Crainimăt: Church and Bronze Age Settlement

In Crainimăt, a Bronze Age settlement is registered as a historic monument. The LMI code of this settlement is BN-I-s-B-01327; the archaeological site is classified as a settlement or habitation site. It lies on the right-hand side of DJ Crainimăt–Șieu at the exit from Crainimăt. This identifies both its historical classification and its precise location within the village.

Culture

In the southern part of Crainimăt, the church stands on a hill. The Evangelical church ensemble of Crainimăt includes a surrounding wall. It dates from the 16th century and therefore represents a distinct period within the ensemble. On the northern side of the surrounding wall of Crainimăt’s fortified church, as seen from the village, stands a square gate tower with three storeys. The gate tower has three storeys and is square in shape. The church’s location in the southern part of the village, its hilltop setting, the surrounding wall and the gate tower are documented as distinct components of the church ensemble.

After the exodus of the Transylvanian Saxons, the Orthodox community bought the church in Crainimăt. After the interior was adapted for Orthodox worship, the church in Crainimăt was dedicated to “Sfântul Mare Mucenic Dimitrie, izvorâtorul de mir”. The present name thus refers to the later history of the church’s use, while the surrounding wall of the Evangelical church ensemble dates from the 16th century. Crainimăt appears under the medieval name “villa Querali”.
