Năsăud: Museums, Churches and the Someșul Mare

Culture

Năsăud is home to the building of the Muzeul Grăniceresc Năsăudean, known as the “Şvarda”.

The “Şvarda” was the former barracks of the II Romanian Border Regiment. It was built in 1770, and the building is considered a historic monument.

In the museum’s backyard there is an open-air ethnographic section, completed in 2010.

It includes a farmhouse from Ilva Mare and a draw well.

The section also contains a large press for grape must and oil, as well as a cart and a sleigh.

A courtyard gate and a boundary stone are also among the objects in the backyard.

The Muzeul Memorial “Liviu Rebreanu” displays personal belongings and photographs of the writer.

They document his life from his youth until his final year, 1944.

The permanent book exhibition covers the complete works of Liviu Rebreanu.

It includes numerous translations into more than twenty foreign languages.

On 2 June 1957, the Muzeul Memorial “Liviu Rebreanu” opened in a house.

This house was built according to the floor plan of the former house in Prislop.

The writer’s parents lived in the former house in Prislop.

The museum building stands on the edge of the village, on the side facing Năsăud.

Churches and Traditions

The Orthodox church “Sf. Nicolae” stands in the centre of Năsăud.

It is included in the list of historic monuments under monument code BN-II-m-B-21123.

This church is located on the eastern side of Năsăud’s central market square.

It was built between 1880 and 1884.

The Roman Catholic church “Sf. loan Nepomuk” dates from the second half of the 18th century.

The “Someşana” folklore ensemble was founded in 1963.

The programme of the 2023 edition of Maialului Elevilor Năsăudeni included a parade in traditional costumes.

Transport

Năsăud’s intermodal transport area is located around Năsăud railway station and the adjacent bus station.

The railway station and bus station are therefore the two designated reference points of this transport area. This classification describes their spatial surroundings within Năsăud and connects the railway location with the adjacent bus traffic.

The transport area is therefore defined not by a single facility, but by the surroundings of both named transport points. Its designation remains tied to Năsăud railway station and the adjacent bus station.

Geographical Setting

The site of community interest R0SCI0232 Someșul Mare Superior is located in Bistrița-Năsăud County, in the north-eastern part of the Transylvanian Basin.

As a continuous area, it stretches along the corridor of the Someșul Mare between Năsăud and Ilva Mică.

It includes sections of the low-water channel, flood channel, floodplain and slopes.

The protected area is located partly within the territory of the town of Năsăud.
