Culture and History

The “Casa 1” house in Sebiș is an example of vernacular architecture and bears the heritage code LMI BN-II-m-B-01701. To provide a glimpse into an earlier period, remains from the Iron Age have been found in Sebiș.

Architecture and archaeology thus stand side by side on two different chronological levels: the house points to vernacular building culture, while the Iron Age finds relate to an even older period of the locality’s history.

On 19 February 2023 at 12 noon, the unveiling and consecration of the “Monumentul Eroilor din cele Două Războaie Mondiale” took place in the centre of Sebiș. The ceremony included a military parade.

Church Heritage

If you are interested in ecclesiastical architecture, Sebiș has a masonry Greek Catholic church. It is dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord. In 1938, the church was consecrated by Bishop Iuliu Hossu. The building replaced an older wooden church in the village.

The church thus combines several clearly identified features: its masonry construction, its Greek Catholic affiliation, its dedication to the Ascension of the Lord and its consecration in 1938. Its building history also includes the transition from the older wooden church to the present structure.

Village Traditions

A folk dance group from Sebiș was founded by the teacher Alexandru Melean. The group was continued by Oltean Vasile. The cultural identity of the locality also includes the “Poienița” Sebiș folklore ensemble, which is associated with hundreds of folk dances. These dances are typical of the village.

This tradition explicitly connects both the founding by Alexandru Melean and the continuation by Oltean Vasile with the folk dance group. The “Poienița” ensemble, meanwhile, represents the large number of dances associated with Sebiș and its village tradition.

The local custom “De mălai” brings the villagers to the fields with various foods and drinks. The occasion ends with a large peasant dance. In Sebiș, “Jocul însuraților” is associated with 9 February.

Geographical Location
