Nucşoara: Lake, Crafts and the Route to Moldoveanu

Nucșoara combines a lake in the centre of the village with paths into the Făgăraș Mountains and a strong craft tradition. Lacul Nucșoara is also known as Lacul Învârtita and lies between the Râurile Doamnei and Vâlsan rivers. As Lacul Învârtita, it is considered the largest lake in Romania formed in gypsum deposits. The lake therefore represents a clearly named landscape feature within the settlement, while the mountain paths lead to a different elevation.

Culture and crafts

In the Nucșoara area, local people still practise various crafts today. These include loom weaving, sewing and embroidery, as well as carving, woodworking and decorating Easter eggs. For those interested in culture, textile work, woodcraft and decorative techniques are therefore part of the same local craft tradition.

Traditional wooden houses in Nucșoara are part of the architectural heritage. Carved ornaments decorate their façades, while handmade wooden shingles cover the roofs. Another cultural reference point is the Casa Memorială Elisabeta Rizea. It is associated with Elisabeta Rizea, who is regarded as a well-known heroine of the anti-communist struggle. The opening hours of memorial sites can be checked before a visit if an interior visit is planned.

Mountain paths

The Nucșoara tourist route leads to Vârful Moldoveanu in the Făgăraș Mountains. A duration of 6–7 hours is given for the route through Valea Rea to the summit. Stâna lui Burnei is designated as another starting point: a forest road leads from Slatina in the municipality of Nucșoara to this Stâna lui Burnei, from where the route continues to Vârful Moldoveanu. A walking time of 6–7 hours can be included as a separate time frame in the day's planning. Mountain routes should be checked against current trail conditions and applicable guidance before setting out.

Cascada Văii Rele, a named waterfall, lies on the route from Stâna lui Burnei to Vârful Moldoveanu. When travelling to a designated starting point, current route information and transport timetables can be checked before the journey. Waterfalls along a mountain route can be considered named points within the course of the route.

Natural environment

The Golul alpin Valea Rea-Zarna nature reserve includes fourteen glacial lakes in the area of the municipality of Nucșoara. The municipality's relief includes planation, glacial and periglacial landforms. Named rock formations include Colții Cremenei. Among the marble thresholds and waterfalls in the municipality, Cascada Zbuciumatul is one of the named natural features.

The municipality also has mineral springs. The mineral springs are considered to contain sulphates, calcium, sodium or sulphur; they could be used for balneological purposes. Glacial lakes, glacial and periglacial landforms, rock formations, marble thresholds, waterfalls and mineral springs thus represent different types of natural features within the municipality. For balneological activities, current information on the use of mineral springs should be checked in advance. In the case of nature reserves, applicable visitor guidance and possible trail regulations can be checked before the journey, without assuming current local conditions.
