Moledo: Beach, Trails and Special Culture

Moledo combines the two-kilometre-long Praia de Moledo with trails, religious traditions and an unusual fortress in the sea. Forte da Ínsua and religious traditions

Forte da Ínsua is located on a small island off Praia de Moledo. The present-day fortress dates from the 17th century, from the reign of João IV, and has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. Within its walls is a monastery that already existed beforehand. There is also a freshwater well there, considered to be one of only three wells in the sea worldwide. At particularly low water levels, it is sometimes possible to walk to Forte da Ínsua.

Moledo's cultural side also includes the Capela de Santo Isidoro, a simple building of vernacular religious architecture with a porch. The Clamores de Santo Isidoro is a communal religious devotion in which a route is followed from the chapel to a shrine or another chapel. On the day of its main festival in July, the Capela de Santo Isidoro remains a pilgrimage site. The Romaria de Santo Isidoro is celebrated in Moledo in July; the Festa da Senhora de ao Pé da Cruz takes place on the first weekend of August.

The planned celebrations can also play a role in deciding when to travel. During the summer season, a service is scheduled at 08:00 on Saturdays at the Capela Nossa Senhora ao Pé da Cruz.
