Discover Barreiro: Waterfront, Nature and Industrial Heritage

Barreiro lies on the southern bank of the Tagus estuary and offers views of Lisbon. The city combines an extensive waterfront with wetlands, woodland paths and an unusually tangible industrial history. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore plan their stay around different interests: days by the water, observing nature or cultural discoveries related to the former railway and industrial history.

Waterfront landscape, wetlands and paths

The Sapal do Rio Coina is a 160-hectare wetland within the local nature reserve. It is known for birdwatching activities and thus forms a distinctive feature of Barreiro's landscape. Guided visits to the nature reserve can be arranged at the reception desk of the CEA Centro de Educação Ambiental da Mata Nacional da Machada e do Sapal do Rio Coina.

The Mata Nacional da Machada is also suitable for planning a trip around different interests. The woodland covers approximately 380 hectares and contains stone and maritime pines, eucalyptus trees and cork oaks. Three differently designed hiking trails invite visitors to explore the flora and fauna. Those who would prefer to include a longer stretch along the waterfront in their day can consider the Circuito Ribeirinho: it begins at Praia de Copacabana, ends at Passeio Ribeirinho Augusto Cabrita and runs along a waterfront more than 10 kilometres long.

Barreiro's water-oriented side also includes Praia de Alburrica and a river beach where Barreiro's traditional windmills are located. The river beach is washed by the waters of the Rio Coina. Praia de Alburrica has a children's playground and beach services. This makes it possible to give different weight to nature, water and a stay with children when planning the day, without all experiences having to follow the same type of excursion.

Industrial history and distinctive buildings

Barreiro is also shaped by its railway and industrial history. The station of the Complexo Ferroviário do Barreiro was built in 1859 and is considered Portugal's oldest railway station. The Rotunda das Máquinas Locomotivas contains 20 locomotive stalls and an electrically powered turntable, known as the “charriot”. The Bairro Ferroviário do Barreiro consists of 23 attached single-family houses built between 1933 and 1935.

The Casa Museu Alfredo da Silva offers further insights. From 1907 onwards, its building served as the central office of CUF; Alfredo da Silva used the first floor during his stays in Barreiro. The Bairro Operário da CUF is a workers' settlement from the first half of the 20th century, with single-storey terraced houses arranged in blocks. For a compact cultural exploration, the first route of the Circuito de Arte Urbana is approximately 3 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour.

The windmills also tell of different chapters in the area's history. In Alburrica, three windmills were built in 1852: the Moinho de Vento Nascente, the Moinho de Vento Poente and the Moinho Gigante. The Moinho de Vento Nascente was fully restored in 2018. The Moinho do Jim was built in 1827 by the Briton James Hartley. The Moinho de Maré Pequeno – Centro Interpretativo offers free visits, which can be arranged at postodeturismo@cm-barreiro.pt. The CICAMM – Centro de Interpretação do Campo Arqueológico da Mata da Machada also presents an exhibition about how the pottery operated at this archaeological site.

The Mata Nacional da Machada and the Sapal do Rio Coina offer different highlights with woodland, wetlands and birdwatching. Those more interested in architecture, railways, working life and local history can make the cultural sites around the Complexo Ferroviário, CUF and the windmills the focus of their visit.
