Almada between Nature, Culture and the Tagus
Almada lies between the Tagus estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. Several areas of particular ecological interest and remarkable biodiversity shape the area. Those planning a trip can combine experiences of nature, maritime traditions and cultural history here – and choose a holiday apartment based on which focus should define their stay.
Nature Between Forest, Park and Coast
For a hike, the Percurso Azul da Mata dos Medos is a good option. The circular trail starts and ends at Parque de merendas do Zimbral and has a low level of difficulty. The Caminhos na Natureza de Almada also offer opportunities for hiking, cycling and birdwatching.
The Parque da Paz offers a different landscape experience. The 50-hectare urban park includes paths, a lake serving as a natural habitat for diverse fauna, ponds and extensive wooded areas. The municipality of Almada also regularly organises free guided nature discovery tours. They are led by municipal specialists with expertise in biology and geology. If you do not want to experience nature only on your own, such tours can occupy a special place in your travel plans.
The coast adds its own regional character. The open-air train Transpraia connects the beaches of Costa da Caparica with Fonte da Telha and stops at several beaches along the route. At the beaches of Costa da Caparica and Fonte da Telha, Arte-Xávega can still be observed in the late afternoon today. This traditional fishing method has been listed in the Inventário Nacional do Património Cultural Imaterial since 16 February. The fish speciality Caldeirada is also associated with Cacilhas, Porto Brandão, Ginjal and Costa da Caparica.
Historic Sites and Art in Almada
The cultural history begins long before the modern city. The archaeological settlement of Quinta do Almaraz dates back to a settlement from the 1st millennium BC that emerged in connection with the westward diaspora of Phoenician populations. The historic centre is also home to Casa da Cerca, a manor house built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with striking views of Lisbon and the Tagus. The building was opened to the public in 1993 as a centre for contemporary art. The surrounding gardens serve as spaces for art, science and leisure and host a wide range of events.
Casa da Cerca is also home to O Chão das Artes, which explores the connection between visual art and science. A plant collection provides raw materials for producing materials used in visual art. In 2021, this botanical collection comprised more than 200 species. For travellers who want to combine exhibitions, nature and unusual forms of communication, this site adds a distinctly artistic perspective to historic Almada.
The Convento dos Capuchos is located in the protected landscape of Paisagem Protegida da Arriba Fóssil da Costa de Caparica. It was built in 1558 as a former monastery of the Franciscan Order. In Sobreda, Solar dos Zagallos is an 18th-century manor house used for cultural activities and featuring romantic gardens and three chapels. Its azulejo panels preserve three centuries of the Portuguese history of tile painting.
Tagus Views, Churches and Maritime History
The Elevador Panorâmico da Boca do Vento connects Almada’s historic centre with the Jardim do Rio, overcoming a difference in altitude of 50 metres. Its glazed cabin offers views of the Tagus and the city of Lisbon. The Museu da Água de Almada is dedicated to water, its uses and its history through an immersive, interactive and educational discovery tour. For visitors with reduced mobility, it has a mechanical lift, an adapted wheelchair and accessible toilets.
The churches also tell stories of different periods. The Igreja de Santiago was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries outside the walls of Almada Castle. Its patterned azulejos depict episodes from the legend of Saint James. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso was built after the 1755 earthquake in the Pombaline style as a single-nave church. It contains an important collection of monochrome 18th-century azulejos depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
Every year on 23 June, during the Procissão de São João Baptista, the statue of Saint John the Baptist is carried from the Igreja de Santiago to the Santo Antão Chapel. Another historic reference is the Fragata D. Fernando II e Glória: it was the last Portuguese Navy warship to sail exclusively under sail and the last ship of the prestigious Carreira da Índia to be designated a “Nau”.
Choose the Right Setting for Your Trip
Almada is therefore suitable for a variety of travel plans: you can focus on nature trails and birdwatching, discover historic buildings and azulejos, or combine the Tagus, the coast and maritime traditions. A holiday apartment in Almada can be particularly suitable if you want to combine cultural attractions, excursions into nature and days at the surrounding beaches in a single trip. Those wishing to set a different focus will find further points of interest in the neighbouring areas: Aroeira, Sobreda and Charneca de Caparica can also help with orientation around Almada.
