Nature experience in the Sapal do Rio Coina

Mills and craftsmanship

The history of the mills shows how closely landscape and work were connected in Barreiro. The Moinho de Maré Pequeno – Centro Interpretativo was built in the 17th century and had three pairs of millstones. From Monday to Friday, it is open from 09:00 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30. On Saturdays, the centre is open in summer from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30, and in winter from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 16:00; it is closed on Sundays.

The windmills are also part of the historic landscape. The Moinho de vento do Jim windmill was built in 1827 in the Dutch mill style. The three windmills of Alburrica date from 1852. A complete restoration of the eastern mill, the Moinho de Vento Nascente, was completed in 2018. These different structures offer exciting points of connection for travellers who want to combine technical history with regional traditions.

Commemoration, archaeology and urban history

Espaço Memória opened to the public on 28 June 2014. Its FHORAL collection comprises accessible interviews that serve as first-hand eyewitness accounts of Barreiro’s history. The CICAMM – Centro de Interpretação do Campo Arqueológico da Mata da Machada, on the other hand, focuses on the pottery produced at this archaeological site and offers an exhibition about how it functioned.

Another historical landmark is Barreiro’s new railway and river station. It was inaugurated on 4 October 1884 and designed by the engineer Miguel Pais. The Igreja de Santa Maria do Barreiro was built in the second half of the 20th century. Together, these places offer different perspectives on Barreiro’s development, without requiring you to commit to a single museum theme.

Water, beach and excursions

The traditional Muleta Álvaro Velho takes excursions on the Tagus and Coina. The departure point is at Pontão de São Marcos in Barreiro’s road, rail and river terminal.

Praia do Clube Naval stretches as far as Bico do Mexilhoeiro. A beach soccer facility was established there. This means the beach area complements the nature and cultural themes with a sporting option.
