Alcácer Do Sal between the Sado, history and hiking trails

Alcácer do Sal combines the history of an ancient settled landscape with the distinctive character of the Sado Estuary. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can choose between archaeological discoveries, nature observation, hiking and water sports. It is worth deciding on the type of trip you want at an early stage: should the journey focus primarily on exploring historic sites, outdoor activities, or combining different interests within the family?

History between the castle, crypt and salt galleons

The archaeological crypt of Alcácer do Sal Castle contains structures from successive historical periods and the associated archaeological materials. The site where the Islamic castle was built was also inhabited, particularly from the Iron Age through to the modern era. Another important Iron Age trace is the Estação arqueológica do Senhor dos Mártires, an extensive necropolis believed to have been established and used between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC.

The renovated Museu Municipal Pedro Nunes opened on 6 April 2019 and displays archaeological remains documenting approximately 2,700 years of settlement. However, following the floods of February 2026, the museum is closed until further notice. Trips on the Pinto Luísa cannot currently be booked either, according to the municipality's notice, because the quay was damaged as a result of these floods. These current restrictions are important for trip planning, while the other historical topics continue to provide points of reference when choosing your activities.

The history of the town is also reflected in two traditional salt galleons, which recall the importance of salt to Alcácer do Sal and are considered almost unique in the world. Its importance in Roman times was also based on its location on the Sado, a waterway along which produce from the interior could be transported away.

Sado Estuary and Phoenician traces

The Feitoria Fenícia de Abul lies at the heart of the Sado Estuary, which is classified as a nature reserve. It is regarded as the first Phoenician settlement known in Portugal and as a unique archaeological site on the European Atlantic coast. The structures of several warehouses, small houses and an inner courtyard are clearly visible at the site. It therefore offers a tangible insight into an early history of trade and settlement without limiting the visit to a single historical period.

The nature of the estuary also shapes the trip. The Sado Estuary is a nature reserve with hundreds of species and a resident population of bottlenose dolphins, considered one of only a few such communities in Europe and the only one in Portugal. A tour of the Sado Estuary includes five compulsory stops. Those wishing to combine nature observation with history will therefore find a different focus here than during a stay devoted exclusively to culture.

Hiking, water sports and cultural discoveries

There are seven officially approved hiking trails in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal. The trails combine the observation of fauna and flora with the discovery of the built and architectural heritage. The approved PR1 ASL – Rota do Senhor dos Mártires trail also runs through the town. This selection makes it possible to adapt your daily plans to different interests and to the desired balance of exercise, nature and history.

Another option is the Albufeira do Pego do Altar. It is suitable for sport fishing, sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Alcácer do Sal remains a useful search term for travellers who wish to include several of these themes in their plans without presupposing a particular accommodation location or facilities.

Several churches also contribute to the cultural orientation. According to an inscription on the door lintel, the Igreja da Misericórdia dates from 1547. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça is characteristic of the decorative style of 17th-century Portuguese Baroque. The Igreja do Espírito Santo is believed to have been built between the 14th and 15th centuries and features Manueline, Mannerist and Rococo influences. In June, PIMEL, the municipality's fair for tourism and economic activities, also takes place in Parque Urbano de Alcácer do Sal.
