Archaeological Heritage from Prehistory to Rome

The archaeological heritage includes the rock carvings at Ribeira da Ocreza. These include a depiction of an equid, considered the first discovery of Palaeolithic open-air art in southern Portugal. Buraca da Serpe is an 11.29-metre-long corridor gallery with an entrance in the quartzite ridge and may have been inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic.

Anta da Laginha lies along the PR10-MAC-Rota de Cardigos Praia and is regarded as a notable testament to the early human settlement of this area. The Roman bathhouse of Vale de Junco extended across two levels. Among other features, an atrium, an apodyterium, a frigidarium, a tepidarium and a caldarium can be identified. On the right bank of the Tagus, between the mouth of the Rio Frio and the Belver Dam, 22 fish weirs can also be identified. They attest to the close relationship between the river and the local communities.
