Alcanena between Karst Springs and Culture

The Museu Municipal de Alcanena takes visitors through several eras. Its archaeological finds from the area range from the Paleolithic period 45,000 years ago to modern times. The collection also includes rails from the “Rata Cega” train that operated in Alcanena at the end of the 19th century, as well as spinning equipment from Minde. The leather-tanning collection is particularly characteristic; because of its technical, scientific and industrial uniqueness, it is considered one of a kind in Portugal.

The square is surrounded by buildings from the early 20th century with wrought-iron balconies. In Louriceira, the aqueducts, particularly the Arcada do Vale, form part of the municipality’s architectural heritage and industrial archaeology. The Museu Rural e Etnográfico de Espinheiro additionally offers insights into traditional clothing, household objects and agricultural equipment from earlier times.

Routes for Active Days

Several different routes are available for planning active excursions. The GR54 – Grande Rota do Carso extends across the municipality of Alcanena. The PR8 ACN – Entre o Aqueduto e o Alviela starts at Praia Fluvial dos Olhos de Água near the source of the Rio Alviela and runs along the Aqueduto do Alviela. Some sections of this route coincide with routes of the Centro de BTT de Alcanena – Nascentes dos Olhos D’Água. Finally, the “Noite dos morcegos” activity focuses on the bat colonies in the Alviela caves; they can be observed using remote-controlled infrared cameras and ultrasound detectors.
