Cartaxo combines wine-making traditions, lively festivals and a remarkable density of cultural points of interest. The region around Cartaxo is known for its full-bodied red wine, popularly called “carrascão”. This tradition can be explored at the Museu Rural e do Vinho do Concelho do Cartaxo and along the wine routes. The museum presents the permanent exhibition “À Descoberta da Cultura Rural”, a restored old winery and a typical tavern. During guided tours, tastings of wines from the Concelho do Cartaxo may be offered.

Another part of the museum is devoted to local agricultural activities, particularly wine growing. This makes Cartaxo a suitable base for travellers who want to discover the character of the region not only through its landscapes, but also through its agricultural and culinary history. Churches, monuments and special collections

Sacred and local history also offer specific destinations. The Cruzeiro Manuelino next to the Igreja Matriz of Cartaxo has been classified as a national monument since 1910. The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Desterro preserves a Manueline portal and 17th-century tiles. The Igreja de São Bartolomeu has a wooden ceiling over the nave, a transept, rib vaulting and a round-arched barrel vault in the chancel.

In Pontével, the Igreja Matriz contains tiles from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The Igreja Matriz de Valada probably dates from 1211 and was consecrated on 6 January 1528. In Cartaxo, the Monumento alusivo à Batalha de Ourique, inaugurated in Vila Chã de Ourique in 1932, also commemorates a historical event. Parts of the former Pelourinho of Cartaxo were incorporated into the structure of the Chafariz Municipal.

For a visit offering a special perspective on local culture, the Biblioteca Municipal Marcelino Mesquita houses the estate of playwright Marcelino Mesquita, including family photographs, correspondence, manuscripts and newspaper clippings. The Museu de Miniaturas of the Ateneu Artístico Cartaxense originated from the Cortejo do Trabalho, held annually in Cartaxo from 1903 onwards. It can be visited Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 15:00 to 19:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:30.

Festivals and activities for different types of trips

The Festa do Vinho takes place in Cartaxo every year and combines wine with regional cuisine, music, competitions and bullfights. The Procissão em Honra do Senhor Jesus dos Passos has shaped the Lenten period in Cartaxo every year since 2008; previously, it had not taken place for 34 years.

For a more active stay, the Complexo Desportivo e Cultural da Quinta das Pratas includes municipal swimming pools, two tennis courts, two multi-purpose sports courts, two privately managed padel courts and various facilities for outdoor activities. This allows cultural sightseeing to be combined with a differently structured day of travel, without focusing the stay exclusively on museums and monuments.

Getting there and choosing other locations

The Concelho do Cartaxo has a direct connection to the A1, the EN 365-2 bypass to the A1 junction at Aveiras de Cima, and the EN3 between Carregado and Santarém. It is also served by the Linha Ferroviária do Norte. These transport connections may help you decide whether to plan your accommodation primarily according to your desired itinerary and journey there.
